Although I cannot say with certainty why prices have
escalated of late, I do know that Fox (located on
Pebble and Las Vegas Boulevard) offers very good rates
(I saved 40% over other online offers on 2/14 thru
2/18/09). Only downside was getting car took a little
longer than I would have liked (about 20 minutes on
Saturday, 2/14 at noon). Their shuttle service was
more than adequate and overall experience was commendable.

Doing the best I could, I secured a Hertz full size car from Hertz via Priceline for $14/day for 3/11 through 3/18. Total cost after tax and fees is about $164.
Probably saved about $40 over the best Thrifty deal I had.
Because my bride has a Hertz card, we can add her to the contract with no upcharge.

I wouldn't be 100% sure that your bride will escape an extra driver charge. A few years ago, I used priceline to rent a car for a few weeks in Hawaii. I ended up with an Alamo car at a good price. BUT, contrary to their usual policy, they wanted $3/day for my wife to be an extra driver. I confirmed that the usual policy was wives drive at no extra charge by calling to make a new reservation (anonymously) for the exact same dates. Neither Priceline nor Alamo were any help. Alamo simply had a different set of rules in effect for business that came via Priceline. Being rather stubborn, I just stayed as the sole driver, but vowed to not use Priceline or Alamo again.
