Car rental in Las Vegas

Since I live in LV, I don't usually have to rent a car here, and
I am not familiar with what the current rates are. However,
renting a car at the airport will probably be higher than renting
one away from the airport due to the extra cost of doing business
at the airport.

You might want to check prices for renting a car off the
airport/and or the strip. If you opt to do this, do NOT take a
cab from the airport to your hotel, take a limosine.

Very correct - NEVER take a taxi, overpriced, dishonest (illegally using long way thru tunnel) and there are better alternatives as mentioned, limousine if u have luggage, city bus if u don't

Can't agree with that as a blanket statement.

We took a taxi from the airport to the Flamingo, the driver was great. Helped us with our bags at both ends, did NOT try and take the tunnel, in fact he laughed when I told him not too, and said not to worry. He gave us a lot of useful information on local attractions and such. Even told us how to earn comps and ask for things. Very nice man. Price for all that $12.00 for 4 people. Had similar experience with 2 other taxi rides during our stay. There may be bad cabs around, but we hit 3 good ones.

I always rent a car at the airport as rates are super cheap and
parking is free everywhere. Although taxes are higher at the
airport, I've found that rates are quite a bit higher at off-airport
locations. I'm renting a car Oct 13th 2006 for 3 days, only $15 or
16 per day for a full size. I got it from Advantage:

One of the great things about renting a car in Vegas is getting to
see more of town. I usually go to some off-strip casino like
Terribles as well as to Red Rock Canyon, which is a beautiful State
park. Enjoy!

I'm not sure about your recommendation for ARAC (Advantage). I just checked their rates for my upcoming 7 day trip the end of OCT and even the rate for an Economy is $144 base ($207 total.) The rate for the full size you suggest is another $30 higher. Based on some of the other emails, maybe the convention traffic ran up the rates for the dates I checked.

If you ment ACE RENT A CAR, they do have some of the cheapest rates, but also a WARNING as their airport location CLOSES from 11:30pm to 5:30am so keep that in mind if you consider them.

Thankyou all for your input, it is very much appreciated.

I noticed one thing, nobody includes the LDW insurance when posting
about rental fees. Thats 14,99 a day extra en makes it rather
expensive. Do you not take any insurance?

Jackie

Check with your private auto insurance company. Most policies will cover you with a rental.

There are a couple of options. Check with your personal Auto Insurance agent to see what they cover, also I believe that some credit cards provide coverage if you use them for car rentals, but not sure.

The only thing that your personal insurance may not cover is "Loss of Use" This is rent-a-car jargon for not being able to use the car for rental while it's being fixed. That also adds a few buck to the daily charge. I never get it and have rented from Budget without problems. The last time out to Vegas I reserved a compact and got a full size brand new Mercury Montego.Total cost for 5 days (with taxes, etc) was around $160.

Make sure you walk around the car and note any dings and dents before you leave the lot.

Yeah, but from what I understand there are a lot of caveats with that. My last car rental the insurance cost me $14 and if the car was damaged I could just walk away. Worth $14 I think.

The LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) is one of the main sources of profit for
car rental companies....

If you're concerned over the liability when renting a vehicle, get a
credit card that offers PRIMARY coverage for auto rentals (Diners
Club and some platinum Visa's offer this benefit...maybe some AmEx's
too?). Primary coverage means if a rental car agency claims damage,
you simply call your credit card company and they handle the entire
claim....your private insurance carrier is never notified.

I've found that the LDW is very reasonable when renting with others
who aren't related to you. If each person pays for part of the LDW,
then nobody has to worry about damage to the car (Whose fault is it?
How much should each of us pay?) The only thing you have to worry
about is liability...
