canada taxes and $10K in cash
I have what is probably a stupid question (and please feel free to
flame if this was answered earlier), but when you go to a casino in
Canada and you're from here, do you take American dollars and
exchange them for Canadian at the casino, or do most people get
Canadian currency and take that across the border?

I would suggest that you call your local bank, and then the casino and see who gives you the best exchange rate. As a Canadian who goes to Las Vegas often I find it beneficial to have a bank account in Canada that is kept in US dollars. If you plan on
gambling in Canada more than once a year, I would suggest you open a Canadian
dollar account if available and avoid the rip offs of the banks.

For purchases, use your credit card. The card company will make the
conversion and it is (as far as I know) as good a rate as you are
going to get.
The casino will charge you a little percentage converting both ways,
but as of a few years ago, it did not seem too bad. Sorry, do not
remember what the rates were, but it did not break the bank.
In Niagara Falls there used to be a little bank at the top of the
hill that made the conversion (both ways) with, I believe, no mark up.

the credit card companies, in their iunlimited greed have been raising the fees above the rates of exchange to as much as 4% . If you have a bank that you have a good relationship with try buying travelers checks in the currency desired and negotiate the rate and fee. The other option is used ATm"s abroad as many banks won;t charge site fees on foreign transactions or network fees and this way usually is better than a credit card rate. If you must use a CC and use must many times, Diners is a little more honest in this regard.

As a matter of fact Harry, I had not. So I checked. My card charges
3%. Yes that is quite bit, but it sure is convienent to not have to
mess around with converting cash back and forth.

You may do better by hitting an ATM in the casino and taking the money out of your
bank account.
