Most of serious VP players in this group will know all or almost all of the common games. Since almost all of us either own vp analyses software or can go online to either a site with paytables, (videopoker, vpFree, 5-card, Shackelford, etc.) or a calculation site (such as vpgenius) it is easy to get the info via a computer. If I come across a game I do not know I can get a quick approximation by knowing the frequencies of the various hands. (Also very useful for quick calculations of multiple progressive EVs.) This is available in VP software but many including myself know the approximate frequency for all the hands on non-wild card games. (I also know that info for deuces wild but since my area has no good joker plays, I have not learned joker.) For example: In jacks or better type games, Two pair occurs about 1/8 of the time so reducing it from 2 for 1 to 1 for 1 costs about 12.5%, Changing 4 of a kind from 125 to 400 gains about 12.6%. (4 of a kind is about once every 425-429 hands depending on the game.) Thus BP Deluxe is about 0.1% better than its corresponding Jacks or better game. 9-6 BP 99.64%, 9-6 Jacks 99.54% etc.
Note: Strategy adjustments will affect frequencies but that is a difficult discussion. At the vpFree2 site where all 99%+ for a given casino are usually shown, you will notice that the EV is posted for each game shown.
How do most of you calculate VP paytable returns?
Do you take the information home and put the information into a paytable calculator, do you have a card of paytable returns in your wallet or purse or do you know them off the top of your head?
