Calculating action

So I'm trying to fine-tune my system of tracking my play, to include an
accurate picture of the actual payback I reap. Before I was only
calculating ROI on my coin-in, which, while being a valuable metric, is
certainly not the only one. I'm having a little trouble figuring out the
math for the payback though.

Let's say I went to Wynn, and put $25 in coin-in on a quarter DB machine.
Let's also say I had $25 in free play. Let's say this was a stinker of a
session and after burning through my free play, I was tapped after earning
only 20 points. Wynn requires $9 in coin-in for each point.

So what's my payback? I'm guessing I gave them approximately $205 in action
on my $50 coin-in + free play.

Is it simply (Total Action + Net Win/Loss)/Total Action?

Is there anything else I need to be making notes of to accurately track my
action and payback?

Thanks,

~Jay

In short, no. It's that simple.

The numerator of your equation might also be expressed in short hand
as "total coin out" - total of all your winning hand payouts. The
denominator is frequently referred to as "total coin in" - total of
all wagers made (bet x hands).

What you reference as your $50 "coin-in", is better expressed,
perhaps, as your "buy in". However, for calculation purposes,
generally only "coin in", as defined above, and "coin-out" are referenced.

So, substituting the terms I've suggested, the equation becomes:

total coin out / total coin in

In your case,

coin-in = $205 (as you calculated from points)
coin-out = $155 (205 coin-in less your 50 loss)

Payback percentage = 75.6%

btw, you'll note that the "TCO/TCI" format parallels a rearrangement
of the equation on the vpFREE home page for expected return (ER):

EV = [ER] X [coin-in]

For actual return, actual coin out is substituted for "EV", and actual
return is substituted for "ER". Rearranged (swap variables on each
side and divide both by "coin-in"), the resulting equation is:

Return = coin-out/coin-in
