CA Slot Machines (to mspevack)John Scarne addnl info

Scarney also wrote that card-counting was mathematically unsound--but,
nonetheless, you shouldn't even try it because the casinos were against it. He also
claimed that Thorp was a fraud and one of his bankrollers was a known cheat.

Incidently, Scarne was also a paid casino consultant.

Ric; is obvious only Joe has read Scarne and he was wrong on name of
book and both arguments. I believe you repeat some later day
judgments on his value to us here. John was not a big time
gamer/gambler. He was, perhaps, the best slight- of- hand artist
ever. Want to see him in action in one of MY fave flicks? View the
impossible to detect false deals in "The Sting" as they hired the
best , John Scarne. As the best, he loved to detect and expose lesser
cheats and made a decent living as consultant to many hi flown
casinos then and now. He was SO aware card counts had an edge, which
he taught, he devised the 4 deck shoe and was on hand the night it
was introduced at The Sands. Remember Sinatra and The Rat Pack
at "The Sands" Frankie was just 1%er till he lost that interest due
to Cal-Neva mob relations, BUT JS was the 21 game savior hired.
That first night with a shoe he detected shuffle procedure done
incorrectly and corrected. Scarne is the individual all counters are
trying to defeat SINCE that night. He rates with Binion, Harrah, even
Buggsy as innovators who provide today's casino action we enjoy. He
NEVER saw a video game much beyond Pong or even simple Radio Shack
home 21 I purchased after he'd gone on. Give a gaming pioneer a
break, don't spread self serving later day saint's smears. None had
attempted Scarne's math approach to long misunderstood casino games
prior to John Scarne. Like... Abe Lincoln was tall, ugly and clumsy.
Detractors took him down but history bore him out when taken in the
true balance. Try READING the first dramatic gaming revelations of
John Scarne. Complete Guide to Gambling, either ed, as both remain
readable today. You'll even see a picture of Scoblete's flat roll to
influence dice on pp 324, 2nd ed. Lot of folks still make big bucks
offa John's original views but must discredit him to remain current.
course, IMO. CD

Nonsense. The Baldwin group published mathematical papers on
blackjack that date back at _least_ to 1956, and unlike Scarne,
they got the math right. If what Scarne was doing was math, then
he practiced the mathematical equivalent of malpractice.

He certainly was good at manipulating a deck of cards. IMO, his
attempts to trash Thorp were an attempt at a different kind of manipulation.

Steve, my advice as a last post which started out to correct two
errors by Joe which I believe I surely did, READ SCARNE. I did say
his math can be faulted but John WAS THE VERY FIRST COUNTER TO BE
BARRED IN LAS VEGAS... IN 1947! Where were Baldwin ??? or
rather, "Who are those fellows?" ( 'nother great Newman flick) that
year? Gotta remember, Flamingo opened on Dec 26, 1946.... where JS
was called in to see Bugsy a few months later on a second Flamingo
visit. He describes the conversation which was several months before
Benny was murdered at Virgina Hill's place in Beverly Hills.
(Warren's is NOT so good a flick) It would do you some good to bone
up on all John ACTUALLY did, not what is touted, much untruth. I
really wonder why. Is surely about money somehow. Enough. CD
