It's a common attitude of burn it out while it lasts because others will
burn it out. There is no sense of community among the hard-core pros. This
attitude is spreading to the newcomers too.
Talked to a young couple after a conference yesterday who've been doing very
well as LV locals. Their idol is Bob Dancer. On the one hand they admire his
get-it-all-while-you-can attitude & don't care about the long-term
consequences. On the other hand, they gripe about the pros who freeze everyone else
out by playing in teams and in rotation. They couldn't see the irony of their
position.
Due to his many classes, Dancer has converted a lot of people to his way of
thinking. Due to the multiplier effect, he & his converts have made quite an
impact not so much with playing strategies (which are solid but commonly
available) but with the attitude that it's all right to get as much as you can
while it's still there. Ignoring the ethics, it doesn't fit with the idea of
playing for the long term. Maybe for the "Destroyers", it may be a good strategy
because they have the mobility to move around to wherever the best plays are
but it surely must be a bad strategy for those don't plan to be or want to
be mobile as you're messing up your own backyard & may be kicked out with no
place to play.
Here's the little bit of philosophy: Most pros are good enough to do well
without the "extra" edges of dominating plays, scamming drawings & paycheck
promos, and twisting comp usage to new lows. By taking minimal advantage (vs
full) of their edges, they could have avoided adverse publicity among casinos &
players & still have done well. But the habits have become so ingrained that
they have to take max advantage all the time.
