When we play VP, we are out for entertainment and recreation (at
least I am). By that other
"endeavor", i.e., our "day job", I think that we have earned the
right to pursue that
entertainment and recreation.

I don't think I ever earned any rights. I thought everybody was just
making decisions about how to spend their time on this earth. My
point was that, no matter how smart I think I am playing, if I'm just
a pigeon in a box learning how to peck in the requisite way to get a
kernel of corn, it's hard for me to be too critical of that pigeon in
the other box to the left who may not be pecking in the optimal
fashion... or that pigeon in the box to the right who as gotten all
philosophical and decided it's not about the kernel of corn, but about
finding the joy of pecking and thinking about what may be outside of
the box. We are all pretty equally ridiculous. To the grad student
standing outside of the boxes recording data we're all just pigeons in
a box. One just has a little more corn. I think that was my point,
anyway. If I take a step back and examine those moments when I'm
trying to make points... well, we don't want to go there.
