Boycotts

Well, this delusional player weighs in with vpFree and will continue to play
each Coast casino each month for only 10,000 pts each which represents 0.75
cashback if played on 2 x points days + 0.25 in a $25 food comp. The show
and gift are just gravy. You out - of towners don't realize that our monthly
coupons for the "A" list brings our % cashback to 0.75 if played on a double
point day and up to 10,000 points. We then get an extra $25 level cash
coupon each month or MORE.

Its not the perks. The "strip" casinos don't like the locals for they feel
even the masses are a little bit more savvy then the tourists who literally
came come in and plunk their money down without a clue what the game is all
about. Especially if they're drinking and "shooting from the hip" why should
these casinos want even semi-educated players who play with a slot card and
put max coins in.

The removal of the FPDW machines to the Coast casinos was a polite way of 86
'ing
the expert players. Get Lost, they say. You're too hard to beat and not
worth the trouble. We like the masses much better. By continueing to play
10/7 DB even if it too is removed we are merely playing the best percentages
around for our 25c level.

Most of us switched to Arizona Charlies for February/March because their
cashback on a promo was close to 3 %. Both 10/7 DB and 9/6 JOB were
available for play. Its not my favorite property and I assume most of the
familiar faces will "walk" once the promo is over.

We have no mercy in taking advantage of a certain promo and then dropping a
casino like a hot potato when its over. Its only business. To me, the
reverse is the same. I don't take it personal when some of these properties
have finally gotten around to eliminating positive VP games. They held out
the longest compared to Strip properties that started eliminating them in the
early 1990's.

Even before VP, it was always understood that no casino would offer a game
where they did not have an advantage. Some players that have befriended
hosts, managers, etc. feel "betrayed" that these friends cannot turn back
this terrible injustice. Again, its only business....they want our monies
and we are trying to separate them from theirs.

I respect the opposite opinions but notice that these threads only become
confrontational when you attach adjectives such as delusional to describe we
of a differing opinion. How can we get different perspectives if we then
"sting" the opposition that doesn't agree with us.?

Well, this delusional player weighs in with vpFree and will continue to
play
each Coast casino each month for only 10,000 pts each which represents
0.75
cashback if played on 2 x points days + 0.25 in a $25 food comp.

They only had one double points day in March and there will only be one

in April.

Scot

Isn't this a little premature? Until the GC and BC finish killing off good plays (due any day now, kiddies) we might as well continue playing there.

Uhh...well...not terribly articulate, but at least you're concise.

However, all of our anger may be moot. Skip Hughes quotes The Las Vegas Gaming Herald in his vp-mail forum as saying that the new cashback at Coasts Casinos is going to be 0.67%. That would alter the whole landscape - suddenly $.25 10/7 DB or $1 NSUD look pretty good. Of course, on double points days, we already get 0.5% cashback, so 0.67% isn't that much of an improvement. Dare we dream that double points on holidays would continue?

If this was their intent all along, removing FPDW and $1+ 10/7 DB
is perfectly understandable - those plays made offering 0.67% cashback suicidal. Of course, it might have been a good idea to tell us this FIRST.

On the other hand, this all could be a smokescreen to placate the rioting mobs. Time will tell.

Your points are very well made. I asked the original question because I wanted to be in line with most of the VPfree members. The reason here is that there is power in numbers. If the majority of us are on the same page with how we are going to handle the coast casinos then we can make an impact to a casinos bottom line. How much impact, I do not know, but something is better than nothing. You can bet the other casinos are watching.
My original response to VPfree was "crystal clear" and I agree with VPfree. I felt that VPfree opinion was based on the following ( Now we will find out how crystal clear I am):

1) If you are an advantage/winning player, by all means play the coasts and take them for all you can.

2) If you are an advantage/winning player accompanied by non advantage guests. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Because in all probability you are going to add to the casinos bottom line. I myself tend to be with several others friends and family when I am in Vegas and I have to schedule my own time (Focussed VP) around my family and friends.

3) If you are not an advantage/winning player ( and this is not limited to being from out of town like myself), then in all reality you need to look for a new casino home. That question has been asked in this forum but there have not been many answers.

All three of these tactics do one thing, ATTACK The Casinos BOTTOM LINE. How much, only time will tell, but it is worth stepping up to plate to find out !!

Thanks and I hush up now,
David

The term "hurt the bottom line" is a little misleading. A 15% drop in
tourism hurts the bottom line, but I think it's a mistake to think that
machines are being pulled because advantage vp players are somehow
devastating a casino's profit margin.

From a purely business standpoint, it makes sense to leave full pay in place
as a seed, since many players also play other less advantageous games and
spend their money on other things. Casinos that pull those machines are
making bad business decisions, pure and simple, but the threat of a boycott
is probably not even a consideration to them. They just want a few more
bucks right now.

As for boycotts, except for the attendant coverage in the media that can
influence the masses, they seldom work, at least not from an economic
standpoint. Take the boycott of French products as an example. Without the
media coverage that spread the word to millions, it would have had no
effect.

Do vp players imagine that they would ever get the kind of media coverage
that would influence vast numbers of customers--not just vp players who live
in town, but those who don't, along with other gamblers who come to town
only a few times a yearand spread their play around various games--to stay
away from a place for the period of time it would take to influence the
target casino? How many years did the culinary workers picket the Frontier
getting little or no coverage?

I understand that it may be fun to talk about, but to really think that a
boycott could work with support of only a couple of hundred players is
unrealistic. It would be more effective to demonstrate for the casinos that
retaining full pay games is in their longterm interest. Maybe scheduling
meetings with management is a possibility.

This is exactly why the Coasts can 86 all FPDW and not miss a beat. Believe
me you are not alone. There are hundreds more just like you and most will
out live full pay video poker. I just wander if the "heroes" moniker will
still apply when the best game left is 9/6 JOB. We are sending a message
that the video poker player is no different than the slot player. The only
thing that really surprises me is that there are any 100+% ER games still
around.

I was just joking for comic relief. Although, Coast actions have
been disheartening. Hopefully they will upgrade their cash back.
0.67% cashback would make 9/6 JOB very good.

My take on this subject is that it all comes down to the perceived value to the individual player. The Coast casinos that were once the love of the locals may continue to be a very good value for visitors.
When I go to a casino, I factor in the following....
Value of a comped room and ease of getting said room.
Same thing goes for food.
Cash back and promotions.
Quality and variety of VP ,

So a place like the Stardust with NO machines that are positive, becomes a good play because of comped rooms , cash back and promotions , but for locals it sucks.

A.P.
