Bob Dancer's "real Name"

<<<<<<<<<I have always been so curious...what is Bob Dancer's "Real
Name??" I
know that "Dancer" is simply an alias, and I am sure some one in
this group knows...>>>>>>>>>

Why would you be so curious? Everyone has a birth name. Many of us know
Bob's real name but why should it be revealed on a public forum if Bob
chooses to use a pen name? Would you be happy if someone revealed your
full name, address, Social Security number and ATM PIN on this list just
because they happened to know it? The fact that Bob is a public figure
in the video poker community should not require him to give up his
private life.

Privacy is important to everyone, as long as he is not a criminal

Heck with Bob's privacy! I'm not afraid to reveal his secret identity! After a lengthy investigation of several seconds, I've narrowed it down to one of these four possibilities...

  Toynbee Doob
  Farquar F. Farquar
  Cleetus Slapdiddle III
  Emilio Esteves

Um...maybe not...I'll keep investigating....

I don't know Bob Dancers real name, although I think I read it
somewhere a long time ago. I don't know him personally but greatly
admire his VP expertise and writing skill.

I find it puzzling that so many gambling writers/experts use
pseudonyms. On page 9 of Dancers excellent book Million Dollar VP he
lists the names of 20 people who played important roles in his
career, and says "the following people are real (or in MANY CASES the
pseudonyms these people use)".

I've always assumed that 2 of the 20 (Stanford Wong and TomSki) were
pseudonyms ... and assumed the other names in his list were real.
Most are very well known names, in the VP world, including some who
post to this board.

In most careers (except show business) people use their real
names ... what is so different about gambling which, after all, is
perfectly legal? Does it help them remain anonymous inside a
casino? If someone spends hundreds of hours gambling, surely they
are recognized regardless of their name. Is it because many people
regard gambling as a "negative" activity ... so they use a fake name
to protect close relatives? Is it because most of these people
have 2nd careers unrelated to gambling ... and don't want their
gambling known to associates in the other career?

I once considered publishing a book using a pseudonym. I asked a
writer friend what he thought. He said it was a terrible idea that
was certain to cause confusion and problems. For example, how would
I cash a check made out to my pseudonym?

Why are pseudonyms widely used by gambling writers/experts? Do the
contestants in the World Series of Poker use their real names ...
such as Chris Moneymaker (which sounds like a pseudonym)?

I know there is some interest in pseudonyms. Jean Scott is a pen name. At first I was trying to fly under the casino radar - but too much publicity - photos and TV appearances - soon blew that plan!!!! I join casino slot clubs and get W2G's in my real name, the one that is on my driver's license.

The usual reason gaming writers use a pen name IS that they are often gamblers themselves and would like to keep the casino from connecting them to their writing and take countermeasures, i.e., barring BJ card counters. This is true for Anthony Curtis, Stanford Wong and Max Rubin among many others. For the same reason, Bob Dancer, Skip Hughes, Liam Daily, TomSki, and myself - and many others - did this in VP. The problem for most of us has been TV appearances - I wore a wig on 48 Hours, my first TV appearance - but I hate wigs - they make my head itch. So after that I just went au natural and let the chips fall where they may. Fortunately most casinos still welcome me - we don't play enough these days to be a threat to any casino bottom line - we try to spread around our action so we never win too much in one casino.

The funniest part of this pen name thing for us: we have "become" Jean and Brad Scott. More people know us by those names than the number of people who know our real names. We even refer to each other as Jean and Brad. The funniest thing happens when someone calls me on the phone and asks for my husband's name - I have to pause and think which name to give - people laugh, as if I can't remember it!!!!

If Dancer would use his real name in play, he might be barred. So, if
Dancer is a "false" name, no one will know him when he plays using his

I've come to love this thread. Perhaps we can expand it to include this
topic. Law Enforcement officers often have undercover identities which
include backstop ID's such as UC social security cards, credit cards and
drivers licenses. The first thing you learn in UC school, is that you NEVER
change your first name. You may use a variation of your first name (
Patrick to Pat or Andy to Andrew). BUT you NEVER take on a completely
different first name. I'm sure an astute member of this group can tell us
the reasoning behind rule number one of UC operatives.

Rastis might consider removing his photograph from the video poker machines
with BOB DANCER displayed prominently on the front, if he wanted to remain
anonymous while playing video poker to avoid the boot. But then again,
that's just Rastis kind of thinking, which is not universally accepted.

Thank you for the explanation. It appears a gambling writer has a
situation much like a food critic. A food critic would never walk
into a restaurant and announce they planned to critique the food.
They keep their objective a secret. But the media (and especially
TV) has made it virtually impossible for some food critics (Julia
Child for example) to remain anonymous. Of course the situation is
somewhat different. Food critics don't have to identify themselves
to order a meal, whereas a gambler must if they want a players card.

I'm thinking the situation for gambling writers may be getting
better. I'm sure many gambling writers are recogized immediately in
many LV casinos because of the video monitors. It wouldn't make any
difference what name they have on their players card. But the same
person may go unrecognized in a Montana casino.

In any event, thanks again for the explanation.

It can happen at restarants too, once the reviewer is known. The old reviewer for the Philadelphia Inquirer said she had to wear disguise's because the people recognised her when she came in.
Of course, she only went to the fancy place's, not the hoagie shop's and deli's.
