Guess I'm missing something, but not getting the age connection. This scenario rings quite familiar.....been in similar a few times, so I didn't read it as a joke

One key piece of info that's missing is where was Judy hanging out the whole time? If she was waiting close by for the machine (and her knowledge that she was there before Bob suggests that she was nearby the whole time), then I'd think she was in the right and I'd be ready to give it up to her if I couldn't negotiate something. But if she wasn't even right there when George got up and Bob sat down, then I'd probably not give up the seat. (Judy didn't protest until Bob had finished putting money in the machine, so it's not clear if she was right there.)

That said, some of the other factors Bob mentioned could change my decision. For instance, if she'd ever refused to give me the seat in a reverse situation when I was the one waiting patiently nearby, I'd remind her of that with a smile and not budge.
