It's interesting to note that in this hypothetical scenario the subject of how much time would you have for your wife and children doesn't come up.

you set your own hours , so being a pro would be an excuse but a not a reason for not spending time with family

The whole notion that a professional gambler sets their own hours is a complete myth. As a video poker player, you don't get to decide when a casino is going offer a multiplier or when a progressive is going to go positive. You also don't get to decide which days of the week a casino will allow you to collect free play or when they do that drawing where you stuffed the drum. These factors might dictate when you have to travel out of town.

If you are a table games player, you have similar issues since playable conditions seldom exist 24/7.

A successful pro needs to take advantage of opportunities when they come up, which means they often do not get to set their own hours.

Whether you set your own hours or not is one thing, and i agree that you go and you play when the best opportunities present themselves. I just found it strange that in a scenario where marriage is being contemplated that these sort of matters would be significant, yet in the article they weren't even considered.

A.P.

You have a bit of a point, but so many other jobs have weird hours already

Absolutely correct, lots of jobs with weird hours, shift work etc., but don't you think that it would be a valid discussion point when discussing a marriage? It might reduce the divorce rate a little . Regards

That's true, Albert. But Dancer also didn't mention asking if the boyfriend had a record of abuse, or tax evasion, or ate like a pig. Dancer didn't ask if the suitor had cat allergies, or backlogged dental work, or a known history of belching in public.

The scope of the column was clearly how Dancer would go about determining whether the suitor was likely to turn out to be a successful professional gambler, capable of supporting a family. Nothing more, nothing less.

I disagree that it's a "complete myth" that professional gamblers can set their own hours. There is no law of nature that forces you to make every possible dime you can.

Let's say that by working incredibly hard at every promo, taking every multiplier and bit of bounce back that I can find, I'd expect to earn $150K next year. If I choose to make $80K by passing up the weaker 2/3 of the plays, doesn't that mean I am setting my own hours to some degree?

If I want to take 3 weeks off to go on a vacation, I can do it pretty much whenever I want. You can't do that in most other jobs. Yes, there's an opportunity cost, but enjoying life has definite value, too.

Your average law firm lawyer and most doctors have far less control over their hours than professional gamblers. Certainly no one with a 9-to-5 job has as much control as a professional gambler.

Yes, there will be the occasional opportunity that is too good to pass up. But those, unfortunately, are the exception, not the rule. Day to day, we have a ton of flexibility in what we choose to do and when we choose to do it.

Let's assume that you are 100% correct, then my comment would change to this.
Would you not be better off framing the scenario as a straight career choice as opposed to bringing marriage into it ?
One could have simply stated the whole thing as to how to determine if you have the goods to become a professional gambler.
I'm not saying that it was a bad article. I'm just saying that it could have been clearer as to it's objectives. Regards

Bob's scenario is not the only one. Here's one I'm very familiar with "Dad, I'm a stone cold professional gambler but your daughter is a stone cold compulsive gambler. If she don't knock it off I'm gonna kick her to the curb!"

For the rest of it I don't work my ass off anymore. I just went back into work mode after two months off. The extra month off cost me bare minimum $7000 in expectation. I'm already living about as comfortable as it is going to get. I don't need to work my ass off anymore.

you CHOOSE what you do in life ALWAYS, my point was and is that you choose when and what you play. Skipping a point multiplier day be a parent is a choice. and a good one. and the pros on this and other sites already know it

You give her your blessing!! If she wants to marry she will. If she really loves the guy, she's just being nice to you in asking. Odds are, if you say no, she'll marry anyway. I believe this is 2015
not 1915.

Would you give your blessing if he was a garbage man, doctor or janitor. Ya see, she has to live
with him, not you..

Cheers... Jeep

I have now attended THREE weddings of pro gamblers.
Poker and sports betting is the lions share of where they make their money at. Blackjack, Craps, Roulette and Video Poker as secondary means.
