Bob Dancer's LV Advisor Column - 19 FEB 2013

Any reporter would sensationalize such a story having "a billion dollars" attached in any manner to a former big city mayor. And while we all understand the premise of "losing" a billion dollars on vp, casinos regularly advertise that players have won "tens of millions" or more from their machines during any given month, when we all know that's just what was paid out or won during gambling sessions while ignoring whatever was lost--which is almost always more. In this case, whatever was won was ignored. We all understand that.

A more important point would be, if Wizard was consulted for the story, how is it that he did not set the record straight here? Such a statement from him, a true expert, would have done wonders for all the speculation we're seeing.

This continues to be an interesting video poker story. If I were still a columnist, I'd certainly try to get an interview with this lady and pay her for it if necessary. Bob's article clearly spells out all the top level facts and questions. A full set of answers would be compelling.

"Losing $1 Billion at Video Poker --- NOT"

http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/bob_dancer/2013/0219.cfm

I agree with Rob. I'd like to know more. What were her comps? Where did she play in Vegas? I saw where someone said she played a 1000.00 per hand. How?

To: vpFRnd that.

What a shame such a beacon of integrity is no longer sharing columns with the world.

I doubt that Shack ever saw the story before it was printed. The reporter likely called him up, asked him a few questions, and then wrote the story. Assuming Shack was quoted accurately --- with all the nuances he likely included in his answer --- is an assumption I wouldn't make. (Nor can I state categorically that he was misquoted. I wasn't there for the interview.) My own experience is when reporters make notes on video poker answers including numbers, what gets printed is often very different than what was said.

Shack may not have previously read the New York Times article that implied the $1 billion was accumulated W2Gs rather than coin-in. And the UT-San Diego reporter was likely not aware of the significance of the difference between the two numbers.

The moral of the story is that $1 billion isn't always the same as $1 billion.
