Isn't the whole point of playing VP to go for the Royal?
No. The point of playing VP varies from person to person. For those who play in
order to maximize their expected long-term profit, going for the Royal is NOT
the whole point. In many cases, correct play will yield *fewer* Royals than bad
play.
It would be closer to correct to say that the whole point of playing VP is to
minimize your losses while waiting for Royals.
Isn't that what makes it a positve expectation game?
Video poker in general isn't a positive expectation game. Particular types of
video poker played with particular strategies are positive expection. The
correct strategy in this sense is different for different games. In no case is
it the correct strategy to always go for the Royal.
