There certainly are bridge players who are good enough to compete at high
levels but who choose to play locally instead of spending the high amounts it
costs to compete in tournaments. I agree, there are plenty of experts in many
fields who don't go after the gold. It's costly and it demands a level of
competition that may exclude other things that are pleasing as well.
