Good point, and I have to chime in here. I was also somewhat surprised by
the tone of Bob's article re: quarter players. Many folks who are experts in
their field, whatever it may be, do not automatically go for the highest dollar
available.

This is going to sound like bragging, but that is definitely not the intent.
I was a tournament bowler for about 25 years, although I retired from it two
years ago. Never joined the Professional Bowler's Association even though I
was eligible for the entire time. Why? I was successful in other endeavors,
and the PBA prize funds were skimpy enough that I would have needed to become
one of the top 10 players in the world in order to cover travel & entry
expenses plus the loss of income from the other endeavors. I wasn't THAT good!!!
There were many smaller events requiring little or no travel, eliminating
3-month stretches on the road. Could I compete with the Touring players? Yep, and
I did in some of those other events. Did pretty OK, too, for a weekend
warrior.

So, what's that got to do with Bob's article? Just because someone chooses
to "compete" at a level under the zenith of their field doesn't mean that they
are incapable of that higher level or that they don't know what they're doing.
Just my 2 cents.
