In this column Bob Dancer writes:

'While everyone has a different "common sense," mine tells me that if
you are really lousy at something you should either take the time to
get better or stop doing it.'

I don't know what Bob considers "really lousy", but given most of his
posts here ... that would pretty much eliminate every recreational
activity in the world. How many golfers would there be? Tennis
players? Softball? Poker? etc., etc.

Putting aside addicts the vast majority of VP players (and other
gamblers) do it for fun. They would fail all of the "tests" in this
column and they really have no desire to WORK at it ... it is
RECREATIONAL. The money they lose is no different to them than monies
spent on any other recreational activity. I've probably spent more
than $1000 this year on golfing activities and merchandise and I play
for fun. I am not about to spend hours and hours practicing. Does
this show a lack of "common sense"?

Would anyone expect this kind of statement from Tiger Woods or Roger
Federer or ANY pro in any sport? Personally, I know if a golf
professional PREACHED at me, telling me I should give up golf if I
can't improve, I would consider that advice extremely arrogant and I
certainly wouldn't buy anything from him.
