I had a friend that owned his own business, and really just could not
afford to take the time off for jury duty. He would report for jury
duty wearing a poka dot bow tie. He said he watched the attorneys
eyeing him, and he was always kicked off. He never served on a jury
with this technique.

Bob, you should consider getting a PDA and downloading winpoker if you
haven't already done so. You can use the dead time to practice,
practice, practice ...

Jury Duty

I had the same preconceived notions as you do .

I thought I would never be selected.

I was called in mid january and selected to federal jury duty
for a case that had over 40 witnesses heard over 2 weeks.

as a result I lost over $5000 in wages and was layed off from my Job
on the day I returned to work. even though they knew darn well I was
serving on the federal jury. My employer called the deputy balif to
confirm it.

However I received $480 in compensation for serving and got to know
the chief district federal court judge pretty well.

Why I didnt sue my former employer for constructive discharge is
personal buisness but the judge told me I had an open and shut case
for back wages and reinstatement.

the question is was it worth it . My answer is Yes.

I did my civic duty and we reached a verdict in a multi million
dollar lawsuit against a governmental beauracracy. I learned a ton
about our judicial system and how it operates.

So Bob I suggest you do your civic duty and go to the selection Be
truthfull during the selection process. And if you are chosen serve
proudly.

People who will lie or do nearly anything to "get out of it" are not
only commiting a crime, contempt of court, but demonstrating what is
wrong with United States citizens of this era.

Thank you for your story, and serving proudly if asked is definitely my
intention. I brought up the "getting out of it" ideas as a way in which
my mind was wandering, I never seriously considered them.

I want to add that after a quick 1 1/2 hours of deliberation we ruled
on behalf of the defendant and awarded the plaintiff nothing. They
simply could not prove their case.

as an aside the other Jurors repersented a wide slice of prudent fair
minded U.S. Citizens with which I was delighted to serve.
