Bob Dancer's CasinoGaming Column - 24 JAN 2006

While speaking of problems at Bally's resulting from conversion to the
Harrah's TR system, you wrote --

"convertible to cash by buying Visa cards" bonus credits....

What does this mean?

It might be limited to Seven Stars players ($1 million a year if you a
vp player --- much easier to obtain now with several additional eligible
properties), but Harrah's they allow you to purchase Visa debit cards at
a rate of 130,000 per $1,000. Since these Visa debit cards are good
almost everywhere, they are essentially as good as cash. For many things
Harrah's lets you spend your points at a rate of 100,000 points per
$1,000 --- but that's for meals or rooms or shows at Harrah's. If you'd
rather have cash, the Visa cards are the way to go --- although you pay
a premium to get this option.

   The level
of "pushing" that is acceptable in Atlantic City is different than the
level that is acceptable in Las Vegas simply because the typical
personality in New Jersey is "pushier" than the typical personality in
Vegas. You can criticize me all you want about stereotypes that aren't
always true (and certainly this one isn't always true), but there is
some wisdom here that might be worth considering.

Another point to consider, in addition to Harry's "reasonable
presumption", is "What do I have to lose by asking?" For many people
much of the time, the answer is "nothing at all" and so the absolute "it
never hurts to ask" is appropriate. But for all of us some of the time,
and some of us more than others, there can be a LOT to lose by
continuing to ask away.

An absolute motto that is appropriate 90% of the time and VERY
inappropriate 10% of the time is a dangerous thing.
