What if Sam is Samantha?

The correct transitive interpretation is that "John is the brother of Sam," though "John and Sam are siblings" would also work.

Just had to correct this, in memory of my old logic teacher!

There's yet another way to look at it if you don't mind labeling "Half Brothers" simply as brothers.

Pete could be the son of Bill and Sally. His brother Sam could be Bill's son from another marriage, and his brother John could be Sally's son, resulting in John and Sam having no blood relationship.
