I was playing a lot of 8/5 BP (progressive) recently, so it gave me impetus to read and respond to this column.
The easy way I use to remember the rule for '7xJ' SF with a sp versus KJ is this: if there's an 8 present, keep KJ; if there's no 8 present, keep the '7xJ' despite the straight penalty. In other words:
'7xJ' < KJ when sp and 8
Or you could write the rule in reverse:
KJ > '7xJ' unless 9p and Tp
