Genius??? You mean the guy who washing dishes at the Bicycle Club and
is now a succesful tournament and high stakes poker player. Oh I'll
agree there are super intelligent high stakes player who no doubt are
at genius level. There are also a ton of instinctive players who just
know what other players have in their hand. If you gave most of those
players an IQ test they would grade out about Junior High level. Most
of them would have a hard time setting a VCR if they still have one.
I agree. Just pick up any free Card Player type magazine in a poker room and turn to the articles about hands they go in with like; (paraphrasing) "I had to get some chips in a hurry at the start of the $250,000 buy in eighteen player tourney so I raised preflop with a 3 4 suited."
Also, every high stakes player in interviews bad mouths video poker as a losing game. One series of articles covered a trying to turn pro in Vegas guy going broke completly in several months. Not so if he would have had VP to play on the side to get free food at least.
