Bob Dancer classes at Silverton

A series of free video poker classes will begin on Tuesday
August 15. Beginner classes will be from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. while the
intermediate class will be from noon-1:00 p.m. The classes will be held
in the Twin Creeks Steakhouse (which doesn't otherwise open until 5
p.m.)

The exact class schedule hasn't been determined yet, and they
have not yet begun making the inventory changes which will be required
to support these classes, but at least we have the starting date and
time. (Obviously the changes will need to happen soon as the classes
start in 3 and a half weeks). When I have the exact schedule, I will
post it here and on bobdancer.com.

My expectation is that the game selection and the specific
classes will be similar to those when I taught at the Fiesta --- namely
9/6 Jacks, 10/7 DB, 10/6 DDB, FPDW, NSU, KBJW, 2PJW, 9/5 Super Double
Bonus, 9/7 Triple Double Bonus, 9/4/4 Deuces Bonus, Multi Strike (9/6
Jacks and NSU), and perhaps Pick'Em. We may well decide to go with Super
Aces Bonus, White Hot Aces, or Triple Bonus Poker Plus as these games
haven't had classes in the past. I may push for 8/5 Super Double Double
Bonus (99.686%) as games which can be entered into WinPoker but not
other software are extra appealing to me. The denominations and how many
games of each type is still up for negotiation.

But at the minimum, the Silverton is committed to becoming a
strong choice for video poker players, and this is good news for people
reading this. I'll keep you posted.

A Myth asked: What are the odds of having your classes at an Atlantic

The odds are pretty good that I'll be teaching again at the Borgata
before the end of the year.

Kidding or not, your gain in ER is depends on your current knowledge and
habits. If you already play at the expert level, there's relatively
little to be gained from the classes. If you currently play at a
less-than-expert level, you will learn a lot. There are more than 100
people who post on vpFREE who have attended one or more of my classes.
The ones who have nice things to say about them greatly outnumber the

The column, as was promised, is - Playing a 4-to-the-royal Promotion

Couple of comments and a question. It's all academic for me, as I am on
the East Coast.

The way I read the rules, as inferred from your column, the contents of
the initial hand do not matter; it's only the final hand where you
should show a 4-Card to Royal Flush. I say this because you consider
the initial hands of (KQJ7)h,3c (AK7)h,3c,2d and (AK)h,Qs,Td,3c, ,...

Somewhere along, there is a typo; 2/27 - should be 2/47

Question: Since most of the strategies are true for a "long term"
play, and this being a short term promotion, how does it affect the
strategy? I am just "guessing" that it increases the volatility of the

I am in the positive group.

How difficult/easy is it to register for these classes?

From your past lectures at Borgata, do you know if there is usually
an overwhelming number of people wanting to attend and only a few
picked? What is the size of the class? From your mail, I am assuming
they'll provide a machine for each participant.

I am just trying to ascertain if I have to camp outside Borgata a
week before the classes, or can just send them an e-mail, as soon as
I know about the classes.

Adams Myth asked: How difficult/easy is it to register for these

Since you seem to be asking about the Borgata, the classes are held in
the Music Box, which holds 600 people or so. I've never had more than
300 in one of my classes there. The Silverton room probably will hold
150 --- although it's hard to tell because it usually is a restaurant.
Although some of my class sessions at Fiesta topped 100 people, most
didn't.

I have a different (perhaps naive) question.
If 10/7 DB is already a positive game, why
not simply play it at the level you're
comfortable with using the perfect strategy
for the base game, and sop up the gravy for
the occaisional 4 to a royal outcome. I
seem to get a few of these over the course
of a trip. The benefit to me is that you
don't need to make any strategy changes --
certain to slow play, introduce error and
lower return -- while increasing your return.

I suppose determining which approach makes
more sense is sort of subjective since you
have to make some assumptions.

Thoughts Bob?

Interesting point with a lot of reasons pro and con. I started to list
them and realized that it was going to be more than 1000 words, so I'm
saving it for my next-Tuesday online column. When you've been writing
columns as long as I have, coming up with new things to say is difficult
sometimes, so I appreciate direct questions that encourage me to explore
new areas. I do have an already prepared column that I was planning on
running, but it isn't particularly time sensitive and can be easily be
pushed back.

I'm sure for positive games you can probably take the no-strategy-adjustments approach more than for negative games, where you need to squeeze out every bit of the extra EV to make it positive. Perhaps this is one of the points you will go over in your article. I'm looking forward reading it, as always.

Positive expectation alone is not enough, you need to also consider
risk. For example, for FPDB, your risk of losing 5 royals ($5,000 at 5
coin quarters) is 61%.

To make things worse, how about us guys that play on the east coast
(AC). We play less than full pay expecting to stay "even" with crummy
CB and some bounce back coupons. Of course we all think we play
perfect. So us stupid "recreational" players "profit with "free" rooms,
shows, spa & pool, gifts and food. It seems to me risk at $1 play
could easily swing 30-35 G untill enriching the bankroll with a few
royals. Risk is very real.

Cheers...Jeep
