Bob Dancer Classes at Greektown

I will be teaching Jacks or Better classes at Greektown Casino in
downtown Detroit on Saturday April 8 and Sunday April 9.

Jacks or Better I Sat 2-4 Sun 12-2
Jacks or Better II Sat 5-7 Sun 3-5

Greektown is running a month-long video poker tournament in April so I
will also be giving a 10-minute "How to do well in this video poker
tournament" lecture at the end of each Jacks or Better class.

The classes are free, but space will be somewhat small (limit of 150
people in room --- and expected to be full) so they are requesting you
RSVP at (313) 223-5101, giving your name and what class or classes you
plan to attend.

Hmmmm....very interesting that you've chosen to do business with
GREEDtown, the casino that banned not only video poker players, but
ploppie slot players that were winners in 2002. Not only were the
players banned, but accumulated comps were stolen from them.

A couple stories....

I'm friends with one of the players that was banned and to this day, I
don't believe GREEDtown returned his comps, that were legally earned,
back to him. Maybe this individual will post to the forum to add
additional information.

There's even a better ploppy barring story, this one out of AC, and
I've promised my AC fans that it will be a lead post in my blog as
soon as my site goes up, which should be sometime next week
(finally!). Bouncing a housewive because she got hot playing dollar
pick'em is pretty bad, but I guarantee you it's no better than #3 on
the list.

As for Greektown, it's a tossup between them and another Indian joint,
Foxwoods, as to which is the worst-run casino in the country (I hear
that they're trying harder at Resorts E. Chicago; the old Harrah's
would have gotten the bronze). Both are truly in a class by themselves.

Let me explain Detroit to you in a nutshell, because I was there the
first six months they were open. You hire second and third tier
personnel, you get the results you deserve. At least Terry Lanni
recognized that even though $100K a day would likely walk out the
door, MGM Detroit would still be very profitable. He was right on both
accounts. All I can say about Detroit is that I wished I played
machines then.

The VP at Greektown actually isn't bad, not really profitable, but at
least breakeven, and there's a decent progressive for dollars. The
Detroit mail is the worst of any major market in the country. Then
again, they did open with lots of full pay stuff, full pay video
blackjack, and the Real Loose Deuces (17-10) for halves-with 1% cb.
Like I said, I wish I had played machines then-it just looked so
boring to me.

There was a lot of business done on the drawings in Detroit. I'm not
crying for most of those who got barred.

You are correct that it is the same casino. although you appear to have
"accidentally" mispelled its name. At the time of the barring I was
quoted in the Detroit Free Press as saying that some casino managers
brought out the elephant guns because they had a problem with mice! The
quote got quite a bit of national publicity and several of these players
got in touch with me as a "kindred spirit" of sort.

When I visited the casino last year to explore the possibility of some
kind of association, I met with several of the "Greektown 9", as they
like to refer to themselves. I also directly confronted management and
said that that particular incident was a festering sore that needed to
be addressed and corrected. I told them that these players needed to be
brought back, privileges restored, and an apology issued.

The entire management team had turned over more than once between the
barring incident and the time I met with one. The casino restored
benefits (some of the players were restored before I arrived) for
8-of-the-9 players. One player remains excluded --- for additional
reasons that do not relate to the barring incident. I've spoken at
length with that player, understand the issues on both sides, and feel
that it was not appropriate for me to get in the middle of it.

If they said they restored benefits of all but one, they are lying.
There is definitely more than one person who is still trespassed at
GREEDtown and their comps are obviously still stolen (we're talking
several hundred dollars in comps).

Then again, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that GREEDtown
management would not be forthright with information since they are the
same casino that *recently* stated they offered 100%+ video poker on an
interstate billboard when, at the time, their best play was 9/6 JB (and
the addition of slot benefits still kept the play under 100%).

Did they do something illegal? And, if not, did they deserve to have
their comps stolen from them?

Bob, since, like I said, I was there, you weren't, I may know a little

with me, but I'd advise you don't make yourself look foolish in the

This particular incident is egregious enough that I can easily understand
why people have long memories. I don't play in Detroit, but if I did it
would certainly influence my decision of where to play even today.

The pay-schedules, cash-back, comps, etc. would influence my playing there

REPLY: I really "WAS there." I'm one of the "Greektown 9," and am
acquainted with most of the others, including the one non-returnee
to whom Bob's post referred.

The barring was an intersting experience. I had been playing poker
for more tha six hours (Greektown was oblivious) until a friend
asked me to get him a snack in the VIP lounge. Swiping my card to
enter the lounge led to me being surrounded by five security
personnel. Having experienced a few Vegas BJ barrings, I was amused
even though I knew that it was going to cost me money -- about
$2,000 in accrued comps + my VIP status as it turned out.

I filed an appeal with the Michigan Gaming Board which,
unsurprisingly, found my "I was legal" arguments unpersuasive.
However, a few days later, a Greektown VP (now their CEO, I think)
called to say that I was welcome to return (sans the comps, although
I did not pursue that issue). By then,Greektown had removed all the
good VP and slashed CB and comps.

A year or so later, after firng two VP's and the CEO who triggered
the barrings, Greektown retained Dancer/Compton consulting to try to
undo the PR damage and recover the several $ millions revenue
Greektown lost as a result the PR fallout.

Thanks to Bob's consulting, Greektown now has what I believe is the
best overall VP in the Midwest. There is an ocean of FP Pick 'Em
and 9-6 JOB. + The $ Progressive Royal machines (at a bar no less)
that have FP DDB, NSUD, WHA, and JOB. It ain't VP Heaven, but it's
a whole lot better than it was pre-Dancer.

"Just my two cents," as someone else here sometimes says.

That is very practical of you. In my town the cable company has almost no
competition. After several snafus from them I decided that, even though the
cost of installation and service was higher, I would switch to satellite
service. I was essentially willing to pay not to have to deal with a
company that I didn't like and didn't trust to provide service in the
future. I have been happy with that choice for years. Gambling is a
different ball of wax, but as a recreational player I sometimes make
decisions that do not directly coincide with my bottom line. Since I don't
play Detroit it is not a question I will have to consider.
