When I get the gift cards, I set them aside until I can call or go on-line to verify the
amount. The Wal-Mart ones are a hassle because you have to scratch off the silver
coating to reveal the card number. Some places will let you buy a larger denomination gift
card with gift cards. Home Depot gift cards don't have a phone number to call and you
can not buy gift cards with gift cards. Several years ago I had 2 $10 Home Depot gift
cards that when I went to use them had 0 balance. Since it had been several years since I
had received them from the Cannery and it wasn't much money I didn't bother going back.
If gift cards expires and/or charge fees, they must state that on the back of the card.
Most of the companies that expire are smaller companies. I had Arco gift cards that I had
received from one of the casinos. They did not state that they expired but when I was
using one it didn't work. After several phone calls and talking to many different people, I
found out that they had cancelled the cards because they were one year old with no
activity. They issued and mailed me all new cards (I think there was more than 10 cards).
Those I wrote the date on them and used them within the year.

Two years ago I played a promotion at Binions where you received $50
wal-mart gift cards for playing a lot. I got 4 of them, and just got
around to using them. Opps.. there was only $10 loaded on the card.
They also gave out $10 cards at the time, but the ones I received had
$50 hand written on the back. I went in to try and get the $160
difference, and even though they verified I had earned the $50 cards,
they said no for two reasons.
1) too much time had gone by
2) Binions was sold to new owner in spring 2008 and thus said prior
owners were responsible.
