Because they *believe* they are helpful.
Personally, I will take the Secret Service's official statements --
since they are the ones that are in charge of preventing and
investigating counterfeiting -- over what people and businesses
believe.
I no longer have a direct reference to the Secret Service's statement
on this matter, but Clark Howard (a highly noted consumer advocate
with a national radio show) talks about it briefly at this link:
