The Borgata does have a fair number of JOB but I think you can probably count the number of machines on your toes and fingers.

So the term "many" but me a bit misleading.

Gary,

at the quarter level the job 9/6 are located all over
the casino floor (just check the pay schedule). at the
$.50 level there are many by the main cage area and
when they restore the area where the construction is
going on i was told there will be more multi game
multi level job 9/6. at the $ level they are located
near the high roller area and inside the high roller
area there are many $2-$25 job 9/6 machines. that is
why i say there are "many".

The Borgota is pretty cheap with the comp's and cashback. Other places in Atlantic City have 9/6 Jacks or better and give more comp's. (Trump Plaza, Caesar's, Showboat, etc.)

I've always been fascinated by how Las Vegas has evolved over the years, and continue to enjoy the A&E programs on the subject that are shown in hotel rooms on the Convention and Tourism Channel. These shows are really good if you haven't seent them. If you're interested, these programs can be purchased from the A&E store website at store.aetv.com. Search for Las Vegas, and you will find "The Real Las Vegas DVD Set" (200 mins), which retails for $14.95. (This may not be exactly the same shows that I've seen, but it looks very close). There are also History Channel and Biography DVDs for $24.95 each. Or, you can just check these channels periodically, they seem to show a lot of programs about Las Vegas, and record them yourself.

Can anyone recommend any good books (or other videos, for that matter) on the history of Las Vegas? I'd especially like to see lots of good pictures of how the Strip has evolved and changed over the years. It's hard to believe how much it has changed since my first trip in the mid 90's - the Dunes was still standing but about to be demolished, as were the Sands, Desert Inn, Hacienda......amazing!

Yes! I am just finishing "Sharks in the Desert" by LVRJ columnist John L. Smith. He has done a great deal of research and traces the development of the strip from the early days, through mob control of the strip, and finally to today's "Sharks" - Wynn, Kerkorian, Harrah, Loveman, etc.

Interestingly, he maintains that for the average Joe visiting LV it was a much better time when the mob ran the town. The average tourist recieved much more bang for their buck since the mob were not exactly MBA's. They provided a good value in exchange for skimming several million dollars off the top to send to the boy in Chicago, Miami, NYC, etc. The new sharks are willing to bleed the beast until the last drop is theirs - pretty good stuff.

Another good read is "Stripped" by Brent Jordan. A bouncer in the infamous
Cheetah's strip club for 12 years he saw it all - and tells it all. The amazing thing about this is the money that was generated - and of course this is the site of the "G-sting" raid that resulted in the conviction of two council members on charges of accepting bribes.

  Enjoy!

Great book reviews, thanks! I have heard of both books - I think there are ads in Casino Player for them; perhaps i saw a LVRJ review of one of them also. I will definitely have to pick up a copy of each now.

Do they have a good pictorial history as well as the text? Maybe there's just a picture book out there starting back in the late 1800's up to today...

I bought large paperback book in an airport shop a few years ago.
It is called "Las Vegas As it began - as it grew" by Stanley W.
Paher. It had Las Vegas history from 1832, with many black and white
photos, and ended in 1951. I don't remember what it cost, but most
likely not much. I think it was well worth the cost.

REPLY: I'm late getting to this thread and apologize if this book has
been mentioned: Huntington Press' "The First 100 (Portraits of the Men
and Women Who Shaped Las Vegas)." Very well done, and you'll
recognize a lot of street names. + It's written as 100 separate 2-3
page biographies that are perfect for reading one segment at a time.
It starts with John C. Fremont (1813 - 1890) and works forward
chronoligically to Steve Wynn (1942 - ). A few others: Clark,
Harmon, Cashman, McCarren, Dalitz, Webb, Sinatra, Luckman, Tarkanian,
etc., etc.

Another great show that I bought on DVD:

Recently, the PBS series The American Experience had a 2 hour special
on Las Vegas, which included a treasure trove of old footage!
Excellent production.
I bought it at a Frye's, it was about $18. Might be less now. Check
pbs.org too.

Great Show!
