Best Strategy for Ultra-Short-Term 9/6 JB

Greektown Casino, here in Detroit, is running a video poker
contest for the month of April. For every 500 points you accumulate,
you get one entry to play a special 9/6 Jacks or Better machine
(three of them upstairs in the high-roller room) for three minutes.
It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it only matters how many
credits you can register in that time frame.
I'm not a 100% sure if the normal strategy is the best one for
such ultra short-term play, but practicing, using different
strategies, I can't tell which is best.

Bob, Jean, Skip and the rest of you vp wizards, what do guys
think?

it for the sites I write for. See you Saturday Bob.

If I'm understanding you correctly, all spins are free and you get to keep
all coin-out. In that case, normal strategy optimizes your expected value
(assuming you don't think about any hard decisions that slow you down). You
simply have 100% cashback.

If you have to "spend" part of your prior wins for future spins, then
instead you have a loss rebate and the strategy will be different.

I should have added that there is a pool of money ($40,000) set
aside for the player and players who accumulate the most credits
playing those special machines in April. $10,000 going to the winner
and the rest going to the other players. The more times you play the
machines, obviously, the more credits you build up.
You make no money on these machines, they are just there for
playing in the contest.

There are some details on the Greektown website. This pretty much
looks like a standard vp tournament. There is a reference to a Dancer
article in the FAQ's of this group (#50) as well as a copy of posts by
NOTI and myself.

Bob Dancer's Tournament Strategy Article

vpFREE Discussion

I have a couple of questions about this tournament that aren't clear
to me:

-- Are you certain that a 9/6 Jacks paytable will be used? Sometimes
machine paytables are reset to a tournament mode that effectively
deemphasizes the RF and the highest paying hands with a bias toward
lower paying ones. This makes a considerable difference in
appropriate strategy.

-- I gather that you get to play one session for every 500 points you
earn in the casino. You suggest that credits earned in the sessions
are cumulative, adding up from one session to the next -- putting low
volume players who qualify for just a couple of sessions at a major
disadvantage (and lending some discouragement) over higher coin-in
players. Are you sure of this? It makes a BIG difference in how to
approach the promotion.

-- Cogno alludes to the fact that strategy is different if, instead of
there being a deduction from credits for each play (wager) and a
starting credit allowance, this is a Free Play tournament where you
start with 0 credits and no credits are deducted with each play. I've
always seen tournaments in the former format and not this latter, but
it's necessary to clarify this for a good strategy read.

Terry asked about tournament strategy at Greektown.

In each of my Jacks or Better class sessions, I'll be giving a 10-minute
class on "How to play the Greektown tournament." I'll teach it this
coming Saturday and Sunday, and then I'll post my strategy here on
Monday.

Bob,

I will not play my 500 point tickets until I take your class and
see what you think is the best strategy for playing in this contest.
I have my own thoughts after running a bunch of sims, but will wait.

That's probably a wise strategy. The suggested strategies posted here
have been very incorrect, largely because the people posting their ideas
on how to play the tournament haven't read the rules. In this
tournament, as in many others, the exact nature of the rules makes a big
difference in how you attack the game.

Er ... did anyone else besides Cogno suggest a strategy for THIS
tournament? -- and even he indicated this his advice is dependent
upon specific rules. What I miss?

Harry asked: Er ... did anyone else besides Cogno suggest a strategy for

Cogno was the only one --- and it should be clear that in general I
respect Cogno's contribution to this site and am not slamming him in the
slightest. But his suggestions on how to play, without seeing the rules,
were considerably wrong. And Cogno is a more-astute analyst than many on
this site. If he gets this wrong, many others will too.

I understand why you don't want to steal your own thunder in advance

How 'bout popping those out in advance so we can scrounge around in
the dirt a bit until next week?

Don't do it Bob. Wait until the classes are over before telling
anyone what you think the correct stratrgy is. Business is business
and filling that class should be the top priority for you and
Greektown Casino, your employer for those two days.
And besides, since I'm in competition with the other vp players
for the money, maybe some of them will blow through their tries
without racking up a lot of credits which would be to my advantage.

Harry,

I just checked the official rules on www.greektowncasino.com. I had
a few things wrong like how much money was involved. ($25,000 total,
not $40,000)Go to their site if you're interested and hit:
   PROMOTION CALENDAR
AMAZING VIDEO POKER RACE, and up in the right corner
   OFFICIAL RULES

I still feel it would make for a fairer contest if everyone got to
play 50 hands with no time limit with their chances, instead of a
three minute drill. I'm betting that a lot of average vp players can't
think and play that fast and make the correct decisions, especially
under pressure.

Completely wrong. I didn't even get that it was a tournament. Guess I pulled
a John Wayne Bobbitt and went off half-cocked.

Geez, I've been reading too much of Bob Dancer's erotic fiction.
