I have a friend who wants to get his Harrah's Diamond Card in
December. He needs about 1,800 additional tier points ($18,000
in video poker play). He is fairly competent and comfortable
playing 9/6 JoB. He asked which of two choices might be the
smartest for this goal and why that might be the best choice.

He has a room offer in Laughlin and wants to know if he could
play their $.10 50 play 9/6 JoB machine, or a $1 JoB game for
those 1,800 points. Both games would require $5 per hand and
thus a similar amount of time.

He wants to know about how much bankroll to bring and what
would be a reasonable win/loss range expectation. He also wants
to know which choice might be a more conservative option. I gave
him my advice, but also said that I would also ask on vpFree where
there are many more experienced and more knowledgeable players.
We both would appreciate any suggestions or information.

Thanks,
Bob & Tim

Actually the 50-Play is $25 a hand, fully loaded. You could always
play less hands of course.

From a variance point of view, I would always play the 5c 50-Play if
the EV was the same. However, I know some people like the excitment
of the bigger payouts of a $1 machine. There is NSU at the $1 level
as well.

Thanks for the response and the point about the fully loaded
50 play machine. I meant to write that he was thinking of playing
the same amount ($5 a hand) and, as you suggested, that could be
10 hands at the $.10 level on those machines.
I believe he wants a conservative approach to finish his card
requirement in the last 30 days. That might be why he asked me
about how much bankroll or risk he might experience in order to finish
the last 1,800 points. 20 hands at the $.05 level on those machines is
another choice. However, this option was not mentioned. Maybe he also
wants a little excitement!

Although theoretically this should be a low cost "venture", in reality it could easily cost $500 - $1000 especially if you do not hit a royal.

I've played the 50-play machines at Harrah's Laughlin several times in
the last three months, and have accumulated ~1200 base points on the
machines playing nickels. I'm a mid-speed player, and 50-play slows
you down, so I average about 250 hands an hour at $12.50 a pop - that
gives you ~300 points an hour.

Personally, I'm up $1,400 over those sessions, thanks in part to a
dealt straight flush, but have hit no royals.

In August and September, these machines were delivering approximately
2 Bonus Credits for each Base Credit, but when I stopped in two weeks
ago, they only gave me 36 bonus after earning 200 base. I was
planning a trip back in January for their VP tournament, but since
they killed the points on my favorite machines I'm not sure if it's
worth it.

If you're dead set on finishing up Diamond, nickel 50-play JoB in
Laughlin is probably the safest play.

If he just wants to grind out 1,800 points and minimize his potential
loss I'd stick to the fewest number of nickel hands that would let him
put through $18,000 in an acceptable amount of time. I've done 2,000
points there numerous times within 8 hours by playing 25 line nickels,
and I'm pretty slow.

It still wouldn't be unusual to lose $500 or more, though. $18000 =
72,000 nickel hands, which "should" yield close to two RF's worth $200
each; if he doesn't get any that alone costs $400. I'd think a $1000
bankroll would insure success of reaching 1,800 points, though.

Sorry to be off topic, but when in January is the VP tournament?
