Bellagio Power Outage
You know, when I watched Oceans 11 and they induced a power outage I laughed when they figured they had 20 or 30 seconds before backup generators would kick in. Dealing in a world in which continuous power is mandatory I know that the switchover to generator is almost instantaneous, like a flicker in the lights. In the Bellagio case........one can only wonder.
Stunned in Texas, Somebody is gonna take licking and I doubt if they are gonna keep on ticking.

I'm afraid it's not always instantaneous. It depends
on the system and how much they want to spend on
batteries to carry the load while waiting for the
generator to kick in. In the city where I work, the
police department has a huge generator, but almost
nothing in the way of battery backup--just the
computer room and the 9-1-1 Dispatch Center. Every
other part of the building goes down for about 30
seconds.
I can't imagine any casino thinking it's
super-critical for every single slot/VP machine to
remain up with no interruptions when they lose power
company power. A 30-second glitch wouldn't cost them
that much. However, in the Bellagio case it sounds
like the machines were down for a long time. They
might be rethinking their strategy after this
incident.

yup, i was at the Monte Carlo when this happened. Monte Carlo's
lights flashed a few times, but everything was up. the only hickup i
saw was that a few slot machines that were being paid out stopped
and had to require an attendant.
i'm surprised that the Bellagio doesnt have power backup to keep the
casino up and running. it probably would be cheaper to install that
than all the $ they are losing.

I am willing to bet that they had back-up. The big question is why did it not work and why could they not manually run it. It makes me wonder if the problem was in the Bellagio itself. Anyhow I am sure that we will all find out as time goes on.

According to news reports most of their backup generators failed, no reason
known yet.

Probably due to lack of Quality Assurance and
Preventive Action Plan/Program. One of our local
hospitals put a QA/PA program into place and the first
three tests of their backup systems failed. Now they
test them on a rigorous schedule and they work
perfectly!!

It's too bad that the power went out on all those slot machines.
Because, even if the lights were out, everyone knows that all slot
machines play and pay the same even in the dark.
