My experience with the old coin-droppers exactly mirrors yours - I never had a problem with the casino making up short-pays when requested, and the missing token wasn't hiding in the tray. But I'll go you one better: one day I received an $85 check in the mail from Mohegan Sun. The accompanying letter said that I had left credits in a machine, and they were forwarding the check in payment. Now I know I had not left any credits in the machine, because I only played one machine that night, and definitely remembered that the next morning that I had a $400 ticket that I cashed out before going home. But I believe that I had forgotten my players card, which I am prone to do (and which I why I usually have a half dozen cards in my pocket)
Apparently, someone had played the machine later that night, while my card was still in the machine, and must not have cashed out. (I hope that whoever it was hit a handpay and just forgot to cash out the residual credits in the machine) I assume an attendant or security person must have spotted the situation in the middle of the night and reported it. So MS must have identified my card as the person's who was due the cash & sent it to me.

Subject: [vpFREE] being shortchanged
When I used to play the coin-droppers in Atlantic City, occasionally I would
be "short-changed" a coin or two. The cashier inevitably would ask me to go
back to the machine to make sure I hadn't missed coins if I said that it
wasn't right. Invariably I would find the missing coin at least 9 out of 10
times. The only time this didn't happen if the machine shortchanged me 3 or
more coins, in which case the problem was apparently a malfunctioning machine
(one time it was off by about 10% and a slot technician came over to check and
found it was having problems).
Thank goodness for tickets!
