Basic Odds Question (I Hope)

In basic JOB, what are the odds of getting a flush after holding four cards of the same suit? I searched the internet and this website, but couldn't find the answer. I figured someone here might know it off the top of their head.

My friend and I played VP for hours in AC yesterday and only hit 2 or 3 of these. It became a running joke between us. But we have had a serious debate about the odds! Clearly, we are not math wizards.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help,
Patty

For the draw, there are 9 suited cards that will complete the flush and 38 that won't (some may complete a high pair however). That puts odds of success at 9/47, or a little worse than 1/5.

You should generally look to connect with a decent frequency. However, odds of missing on 10 given successive draws are about 12%. There's a better than 1% chance that you'll fail to complete a flush on any of a given string of 20 one-card draws.

52 cards in a deck and 13 of each suit. Deal 5 cards with 4 of the same suit leaves 47 cards left and 9 to create a flush. So the odds of completing the flush would be 9/47 or 19.15%.

Those 4 card hands for a flush always seem to be killers. I have played 50-play before betting 50 hands and have held 4 low cards like 3,5,7,9, all the same suited cards hoping for a flush draw and got a big FAT ZERO back and lost on all 50-hands. I kept looking like I must have held the wrong cards but I didn't draw a flush on all 50-hands and then like 20 minutes later it happened again ! That's why we LOVE video poker I guess, odds are great on the game but anything can happen to you, just remember that !

The odds should be 4-1.

47 cards remain to be drawn from with 9 being flush fillers, thus 9/47ths of the time you will make your flush.

So when drawing to a 4-flush, you'll hit a flush a bit less than 1 time out of 5. For every 5 attempts, you can expect about 1 hit and 4 misses. We express the same thing by saying 1-to-4 odds, or 1:4.
