There seems to be a bit of confusion in terms in this discussion. My
understanding of the term "odds" is that it represents two numbers ...
the first being the number of ways for a positive outcome ( 9 in this
case ) and the second the number of ways for a negative outcome ( 38
for this case ). Therefore the odds of a draw to a four flush dealt
hand would be 9 to 38. The ratio of the number of positive outcomes to
total number of possible outcomes represents the probability of
success ( 9/47 here ). I point this out because these are specific
statistical terms that a lot of folks are confused about. I would also
like to point out that probability only applies to events that have
not yet happened. There is no probability associated with an event
that has already taken place but we can discuss probability of the
event's happening ( or not happening ) in the future. For example
there is no probability regarding whether today is Monday ... either
it is or not. If we randomly pick a day of the week, the probability
that we pick Monday is 1/7. The odds of picking Monday would be 1 to
6.
By the way, the probability of not drawing a single flush out of
fifty hands where four suited cards are held would be (38/47) ^ 50 or
about 24 times out of a million tries.
Hope this helps.
