Barbary Coast Downgrades

In message # 19462, Les Silber wondered if anyone intended to talk
personally with Lisa about this.

I did call Lisa a week ago to express my disappointment over what has
happened. She had already heard from many others.

She stated that the decision to downgrade was a corporate one. She
added that when the details of the new players club are unveiled, we
may be appeased somewhat.

As out-of-towners,(Canadian), we have enjoyed a ton of hospitality
from the Barbary Coast. We have had great summer mailings, many many
room comps, slot tournament invitations, etc. Even though the future
there does not look as bright as the past, the video poker is still
not that bad.

We probably will continue to go there, at least for a while.
However, as I explained to Lisa, we will not play there as much.
Ultimately, this could result in our receiving less offers, and we
will have to look elsewhere.

I also pointed out to Lisa that there is considerable competition for
our patronage. In fact, from strictly an economic point of view, its
already not worthwhile to incur the cost to fly to Las Vegas just to
play video poker. Unless Las Vegas continues to offer different (and
better) games than we can find close to home, its hardly worth going
there.

Unless Las Vegas continues to offer different (and

better) games than we can find close to home, its hardly worth

going there.

Here is the crux of the matter. A few years ago the VP opportunities
on Indian reservations, gambling "riverboats", and other non-Nevada
venues were laughably bad compared to Vegas. Now, those non-Nevada
games have improved somewhat, while Vegas games have gone completely
down the toilet. Riverboats a half-hour drive from home start to
look good when if you fly to Vegas, you have to scrounge to find a
10/7 Double Bonus game.

I encourage everyone from out of state to "vote with their feet" and
stay out of this overheated hellhole until the video poker is
restored to what it used to be. There are gambling destinations
galore with more scenery and ambiance than Vegas; Reno/Tahoe,
Gulfport/Biloxi, and even the slums of Atlantic City (where there's
an ocean beach, at least) come to mind.

Neil,

I think many people are getting the wrong impression about LV from the few
pessimists and nay-sayers that sometimes seem to dominate this list. While
it is true that Coast has decimated their inventory of FPVP and the total
inventory of FPDW has therefore been drastically reduced, I have never had
a problem finding a FPDW machine when I wanted one. I just don't go to GC
or Orleans anymore. I do go to the Fiestas, Stations, Palms, MonteLago,
Sam's Town, several downtown properties, AC Decatur, Cannery (OK I don't go
to those but they have them). Since I'm playing a lot of DB and JW I could
also go to Tuscany, Binions (3-play 10/7), Castaways or any number of others.

While I truly miss Orleans and know others really miss Suncoast, BC and GC
Las Vegas is still a VP wonderland. Compared to the few FP machines that
exist outside of this Mecca I don't know why you would even think about not
coming here.

I was feeling similarly to this earlier this week and then I started to
think further.

Actually I think Vp is changing everywhere. (not just in Las Vegas) Some
of the best plays in the Midwest are drying up here too. We used to be able
to be "married" to a casino knowing that the VP would always be good. Now
we need to think of it as having "affairs" and being able to change partners
when the VP isn't as good as it used to be. I think there will always be
opportunities to get good VP maybe just not at the same place every
night.... Our best hope is that there will always be a new place opening up
and trying to solicit us. Maybe it won't have everything we are used to,
the carpet might be different, or we have to drive further, or we might have
to learn a new game.... So even though we can't imagine it ever being as
good as it used to be, it might be better.

SNIP...

You got to be able to work the tour nowadays. The tour changes, at
least in part, every month.

Heres a hint on how to work the "Tour" most effectivly.

Get one of those big paper calanders you know the 18"x24" ones.
Decide what casinos you are going to play on which days . Write down
what casino, points and other kinds of bonuses are happening that
day. Affix any coupons for those casino days to it with a small
piece of tape (sort of like a flap). hang it in your computer room.

Using this system there is no more searching for the right coupons
to the right casinos on the right days. No more forgotten coupons,
lost or missed bonus point days or big dinner comp coups. just pull
off the coup read the reminder grab you bankroll and go.

Our system is a little more involved, but it works for us....

We use a daily pocket size calendar to keep track of events. Since we
can carry it with us we can add things we discover (like drawings,
added multi-point days, etc.) that come up while on our daily tour.

To keep track of all the coupons/postcards/invitations we have a small
file box with a hanging folder for each day. When coupons or invites
arrive we write them in our daily planner and then put the coupon in
it's daily folder. Some mornings it feels like Christmas when we
pull out the daily folder with its plethora of offer coupons and
postcards!

many top line jack pots you hit (if any)? a place to keep your slot
cards and coupons as well as your strategy cards? Phone numbers and
e mail addresses of chat friends?

Man oh man thats a great idea. I wish I thought of it.

should re-think the strategy....<g>

Last year (2002) I made 8 trips to Las Vegas. This year I have made 3 and
plan one more trip in December. Next year, I plan to take just two trips.
Prior to 2002, I made a total of two trips to Shreveport/Bossier City in
six years. This year, I am averaging one trip a month. Shreveport is a
three hour drive and I receive good offers two or three times a week.
Harrahs now owns Louisiana Downs. Quarter 9/6 JOB, 10/6 DB and 10/7 DDB are
available there. Next year a new casino will open at LA Downs and more than
double the game capacity from just under 1,000 to over 2,000 machines. The
Harrahs and Boomtown riverboats offer some decent games including FPPE,
NSUD, both .25 & .50 progressives that have fast moving meters which are
often positive. Cashback at Boomtown is .50% with double points on Sunday.
The Buffet at Boomtown is excellent. The rooms at Harrahs are very nice and
I am often comped a suite during the week. With the decrease in excellent
plays in Las Vegas, the increase in air fares & airport hassle factors,
Louisiana gaming is becoming more and more attractive. In addition the
Horseshoe offers 100x craps with $5 minimum 24/7/365 in a very nice all
suite hotel/casino. With online sports wagering and "live" Texas Hold'em
poker and improving "local" casinos outside of Nevada, I think Las Vegas
may have some real competition that is affecting its bottom line for the
first time ever. Management is caught between a rock and a hard place when
it comes to reducing pay tables to increase profits or improving pay tables
to attract more players.. The last two years I spent Labor Day weekend in
Las Vegas but today I'm off to Shreveport to spend 3 nights at Harrahs
playing 9/6 JOB, PE and triple play NSUD at Boomtown.
