Back-Rooming

<<<Can I just ask-- What exactly are you people doing that has you so
worried about being dragged into a casino's back room and being beaten
up?>>>>>

Several years ago at Casino Royale I was told I was being detained for
suspicion of cheating. My crime--consulting a laminated strategy card.
I was not back-roomed, but was ordered to give them my strategy card for
examination. After complying they returned the card and I was allowed to
go. Earlier I had propped the card on the machine near the card reader.
They said they were checking to see if I had an illegal device which I
was trying to insert into the machine.

Hi John,

After you were "allowed" to leave, did you do so immediately? Or
did you stay and play some more? If you did continue to play, did
you also have the strategy card prominently displayed on the machine?

Many years ago, before I memorized the strategy, I always played
with a laminated strategy card. Sometimes it was in the tray of the
machine, other times in my purse. I never tried to disguise the
fact that I was using a card before making certain decisions. I
can't recall that any casino personnel ever approached me to discuss
the use of a card. Of course, this may well have been before
we "advantage players" began to ravage the casino's bottom line.(-:

Has anyone else had a problem while using a strategy card?

Babe

See that, I have no problem with if the security people handle it properly. Ask me to see my strategy card, you'll have no problem I'll hand it over in a second. Demand it and accuse me of cheating, whole other issue.

They can only treat you badly and get away with it if you let them. I haven't had a problem, but you can bet I'll never let them get away with anything either.

It wasn't exactly a problem, but in March at the El Cortez I was
consulting multi-strike strategy that I had on a folded piece of paper
in my hand near the tray when an "older" woman who was hanging around
their poker tables came up to me and said something like, "for cripe's
sake just push the button." Then she queried me as to how much my 2
thousand, some credits were worth. I was playing dimes, but she
assumed I was playing pennies. At first I thought she was trying to
distract me and I was being very cautious for someone trying to print
out my ticket or pick my pocket, but after she went away I realized
that she worked there - could have been Mrs. Gaughan for all I know.
Jackie himself was in the poker room too. She has kind of a Dolly
Parton type hairdo, lots of makeup and is probably in her 70's.

After realizing that she worked there though I figured that she was
checking out the fact that I was looking at my "cheat-sheet." Maybe I
should have worried about being asked into the back room!

Thanks for relating your interesting experience at EC.

I doubt that you encountered Mrs. Jackie Gaughan. I think (but am
not sure) that she has departed LV for Heaven. I also think that
Jackie is years past his 70's. I've prayed for his health recently,
so that the EC doesn't get sold off as happened with the rest of
their downtown casinos. Since Jackie still resides at the EC (the
last I heard, anyway) I don't think that Michael will sell his home
from under
him!

I think that if I had been accosted, as you were, that I would have
clutched my purse, cashed out and tightly held on to my ticket, and
politely but firmly asked the woman to leave. If that didn't work,
I would have loudly yelled for security to remove the woman who was
harrasing me. At best, she sounds like a head-case. At worst a
thief. Certainly, you do not have to put up with that kind of
unnerving nuisance.

She,s alive & fairly well & i thought las vegas was heaven!!

Michael had the Coast casinos, then sold them to Boyd gaming at about
2/3 of what they would have gotten had he gone thru with the IPO that
Michael cancelled,
Thats ok, I bought Boyd stock that day & made $ ,daughter wants to be
Dr. so i sold stock to pay for school.( boyd casinos earnings have
DOUBLED EACH of the last 4 quaters & suncoast still to come)

Jackie sold HIS casinos himself at about a 50% over fair vaule, ask
Barrick Gaming, per pure hearsay Michael & rest of family not too
pleased with Dad.
But Dad was not happy with the rest for not goin thru with IPO

I think that if I had been accosted, as you were,

sounds more like nosy old lady at worst, accosted is pretty strong
for an old lady who may have been only tryin to help.
Paranoia running deep lately on this group.

Actually, MJ, I think that "prudence" is more applicable
than "paranoia", particularly for a woman, alone, in a casino
enviornment.

Furthermore, the secondary dictionary definition of "accosted" is "a
greeting, question or remark". Even the primary definition, which
is "to confront boldly" is, IMO, quite appropriately used in this
instance.

Thanks for your interesting information about the Gaughan family.

This woman could very well have been into her 80's but I'm 99% sure
she was working there. Later I saw her socializing with many of the
employees and she looked like she was working in the poker room.

M J ,

No, I wouldn't call it "accosted" either, but I do think she was a
little more than a nosy old lady. She did look like she was trying
to get a glimpse of the multi-strike strategy sheet in my lap. She
went away quickly when I just gave her a puzzled look.

I remembered what happened to Don the Dentist though. I was pretty
well ahead at the time, but only cashed out up $55. Then I gave it
all back on the downtown deuces. :frowning:

I don't play any higher than quarters, only visit 1-2 times per year
and spend less than half a day at the EC so I don't think I'm any
threat to their bottom line.

Congrats on the future MD. I had to sell my STN last year when we
were paying for an addition to our house. Sure wish I had borrowed
a little more $$ instead.
