Michael,
When you call a host ahead of time, there is no obligation on your part. Usually they will give you "casino rate" for the room and then decide whether to comp or not based on your play level when you visit their property. Remember the hosts job is to find new players and keep them coming back. I have never had a host be anything less than friendly when I called ahead of time. This is their job and bringing new players in is part of the requirement for them to succeed at their job.
When I call I tell them I heard of their property and it is the type of place I would like to stay at. I never say," You have 10/7 DB so that is why I want to stay there.". I usually just say," I heard you have a nice hotel, a good health club, pool, etc". I do discuss my coin-in. After every visit, I ask the host what my coin - in per day was and I keep track of this in my gambling log as well as the per day win/loss. Then when I call a host I can discuss typical coin-in/day. I don't press, I just tell them what my average is (usually estimating on the low side). Once, before my first visit to GVR, the host comped me upfront. Don't exaggerate
Before you go, call a host, make the reservation through them and then meet the host when you arrive even if it is just for a couple minutes to say hello. After a couple days of play , call the host and ask them to evaluate your play. Every casino is different as to what is required to get room and / or meals comped. Rule of thumb, the nicer the property the most $$ coin in required.
I don't bug the host for meals everyday. I just use my points for meals or charge them to the room and ask the host to evaluate before I checkout. Don't rely on the people manning the checkout desk. They have no comp authority. Be sure the host evaluates your play. I just call and leave them a message they day before my checkout and ask them to look over my play and bill and see what they can do. My wife and I play on separate cards but ask the host to "link" them together when he evaluates.
I feel it is best to "play where you stay". Why jump all over town when the same games are offered where you are staying. Concentrate your play at a casino you like and you will be surprised what a host may do.
What coin in does it take? It all depends on where you are staying. On this first trip at Atlantis I averaged $16k/night stayed.
Since you are already there on a postcard rate. Contact a host when you are there and tell them you like the hotel, restaurants, etc and you would like to get established. Ask for them to evaluate your play and look at your bill prior to checkout and that you would like to call them before you plan your next trip. Be polite. 99% of time I accept whatever they do and just say "thank-you".
Jay

Jay, et al.
At the risk of sounding like a newbie, when you call a host ahead of time,
what are his or her expectations of your play. For example, do you discuss
your playing habits, are you under some kind of obligation to play a certain
amount of coin-in? At what amount of play do I achieve the amount of balls
necessary to get casino rate and concierge tower.
BTW, I'll be at Atlantis two nights this week, but I got the reservation
through a postcard rate.
At what approximate coin-in or rate per hour (not just at Atlantis, but
anywhere) can I then ask for my room and/or meals to be comped or
discounted? Or do I just hand them my player's card during checkout and see
if anything is taken off?
Thank you in advance,
Michael.
