I've regularly taken the train between "Center City" Philly and AC and
find it a reliable, comfortable and inexpensive transport.

How close is the train station to the boardwalk? Are there shuttles or
taxis?

Free shuttles meet each train (wait of 5-15 min).

If dealing with bulky luggage, or antsy to go and not deal with
inter-casino stops, taxi's are available ... figure $6-$11 + tip for
the Boardwalk casinos, $14 for Marina district.
