Atlantic City Information needed

We will be flying to AC Sept. 30 and returning to Vegas on the 4th, staying at Bally's. I have checked the database, but would appreciate if anyone has additional information that might helpful. We haven't been to AC for years.

Some questions. Which Harrah's properties have the best buffets? Any AC promotions we could take advantage of? Are there any day tours to NYC from AC?

TIA for any suggestions, privately or on the forum.

You know, Jean, I've always been a big fan of doing my own scouting
and going out and getting stuff myself. Don't you think it's kind of
embarrassing for someone of your magnitude in the community to
continually have to ask the gaming public (99% of which would be of no
help to you anyway, and the other 1% wouldn't likely help you at
gunpoint) for help when you never offer anything in return? Then
again, it seems like Dancer has a list of people who just can't wait
to call him with stuff to play.

You can find $5 9-6 Jacks all over town. Taj has it in Triple Play,
with 1% theo. Only three that I know of offer them with better than
2.5% theo. I think you'd be much more comfortable at Harrah's, even
though the theo on the Jacks is either 1 or 1.5%.

  Jean,

In addition to our LV travels we do get to AC 2 or 3 times per year. We feel the best buffet is at Showboat (owned by Harrah's). While we play DB 10/7 in Vegas, the best we can do in AC is JOB 9/6.

Jean,

There are lots of good VP at Showboat. In the back, in the House of
Blues section, there are 28 MG/MD .25/.50/$1 TITO 9/6 JoB. These VP
are to the left of the bar as you face the boardwalk. There is also a
round bank of 6 MG/MD $1/$2/$5 TITO 9/6 JoB. This is the largest
inventory of FP VP in any HET casino in A/C.

Showboat also has the best buffet of any HET casino. Their coffee
shop "Mansion House Cafe" is also very good. Bally's "Virginia City"
buffet is second best.

For the best 9/6 JoB VP and buffet, you need to check out the
Borgata. It's a beautiful casino and the buffet is the best I have
EVER had (including Vegas). It's expensive though and comps are tough
to come by for a low-roller like myself (.25 VP).

Finally, there was some good VP of all kinds at Trump Plaza. I
haven't been in their in about 18-24 months (due to HET offering
better and more free night comps). But Trump Plaza is nice.

Hope this helps!

In my opinion, Showboat has the best buffet for the buck.
Also if you haven't bought your plane tickets yet, check out Spirit
Airlines. They have flights to and from LV and AC for under a hundred
dollars each way. It an honor to have you coming to AC.

with a lot of AC reports. I am like you Jean...when needing

Lets get some Royals!!!
Beachstu

Hi Jean.

Last April, my buddy and I went to AC for the first time. He lives in Vegas
and I live in L.A. We stayed at a timeshare within walking distance of the
Boardwalk, so we didn't bother renting a car.

Our experience with Atlantic City was pretty much a waste of time. Every
single person we came across while we were in AC was either mean or rude.
At the very best, every person we met (employees, dealers, customers, bus
drivers, etc.) was unhappy and grouchy. I have never experienced such a
negative city.

The casinos are more like what you will find in Laughlin, than in Las
Vegas. Not terrible - not too nice, either. Our experience at Borgota was
just as bad as on the Boardwalk (even though I hit one of my two Royals
there). Our worst meal during the entire trip was in an "up-scale"
restaurant in Borgata. The restaurant had trash all over the floors and the
management was even more rude than the wait staff. A restaurant would go
out of business really fast if they tried that in Vegas!

I get massages in Vegas frequently and have become accustomed to the nicer
spas in the valley. I was extremely disappointed with my massage and whole
spa experience at Caesars AC. The place is a dump!

The Boardwalk, itself, is a pile of crap. We saw many buildings that
were in extreme disrepair and some that were even boarded up. Lots of
graffiti. Very seedy and unwelcoming. Our whole AC trip was a lousy
experience. I will not be going back.

But, Jean, I have to answer your question about a day trip to NYC.

My buddy and I took a 6am bus from AC to NYC for only $30 (round trip)
each. We could have rented a car for less. But, the day trip would have
cost much more, due to extremely high parking costs in Manhattan. A friend
of my buddy's met us there and spent $20 for only two hours in a parking
garage. Street parking is also very expenses, *if* you can find it.

The Greyhound bus arrived in Manhattan at 8:30am. We spent the day being
tourists, walking all over Manhattan. It was so exciting to see all the
landmarks that I had only seen on TV and in movies! By 5pm, we had done
most everything we wanted and took the bus back to AC. I cannot wait to go
back to NYC - for a much longer visit!

The best part of our experience in NYC was: the people. Every single person
that we came into contact with was friendly and helpful. I never got any of
the "New York Attitude" that I was expecting. Although it was not an actual
'tour' of the city, I would not have done it any differently. Our day trip
to NYC was the highlight of our vacation and made the whole trip back East
worthwhile!

Paladin, scouting is important, but haven't you validated the wisdom
of Jean's asking for info with your comment about Dancer? You never
know where good info is going to come from. If Jean gets 200
replies with just one nice enough tidbit, she's ahead of the game.

A good example of a non-pro giving up fantastic info was the "Sic Bo
Pro". That's the moniker Stanford Wong gave to a recreational
player who discovered an error in a Sic Bo layout in the South (I
think it was New Orleans) several years ago, and told Wong about
it. Had the "Sic Bo Pro" kept it to himself, he could have
extracted a long-time income from that game. (very few people would
notice a mistake on a Sic Bo layout). Instead, Wong felt obligated
to tell his newsletter customers about the game, and of course it
was over in a few days.

--Dunbar

Actually, it was the Biloxi Grand.

Their buffet had a series of paper placemats with "Grand New Games" on them.

Even years after the debacle, the Sic Bo placemat had a picture of the
80 for 1 layout.

Why in god's name if you live so close to Vegas would you bother
coming here to AC? I don't get it. I live in NJ and like AC, but
there's no place like Vegas.

I'm surprised you found the people to be rude. The casinos have had
a big push on service improvement, and it has gotten to the point
where the service has gone obsequious. I guess being from LA you'd
now feel right at home.

Many travel to various casino locales because a profitable opportunity
exists. I doubt this was the intent of the OP but many give very
little regard to WHERE the casino is as long as the game has an EV
that's high enough.

As far as the service levels in AC, I would agree that HET has had a
positive impact. Trump and Resorts....not so much.

I majored in Snarkology in college, but that was many years ago. Maybe
Jean will surprise us and post a TR listing the theos and offers from
all the AC casinos. I'd post them myself, but then no one there would
talk to me anymore. AC was much better 15 months ago, right now there
are maybe two plays left. $5 Jacks is a winner, and a marginal one at
that, at precisely one casino in town at this point.

I believe this will change at some point, but the days of AC being
good are probably history for good. Then again, with HET rumored to
probably sell Showboat and maybe split Bally's/WWW/Claridge from
Caesars (the former a near certainty, the latter a possibility-those
Pinnacle billboards announcing their presence in the AC
market-theoretcally in 2011-are there for a reason, you know), the
ensuing competition may make things interesting again. Although you
need at least 3% theo on 9-6 Jacks to make it a winner for the player
and I just don't see that happening any time soon.

We went to Atlantic City because:
1) Neither of us had ever been there and really wanted to see it for
ourselves.
2) He had a timeshare week that was going to expire if he didn't use it.
3) I used frequent flyer miles for the airfare and had a free place to stay,
so it was a very inexpensive vacation.

BTW, not only were the casino employees mean, rude, and just plain unhappy.
Most of them were stupid as dirt. I've never experienced such stupidity in
my life as we did in Atlantic City.

I asked the lady at the Caesars AC players club if I could use my points to
pay for a massage at the spa. She wouldn't tell me the answer until I gave
her my player card number. I told her she didn't need my number just to
answer this simple question. She was too stupid to figure that out. After
arguing with me, she said that she would have to ask her supervisor about my
question. She came back and said I could use points to pay for
spa purchases, but not for a massage. Guess what...she was wrong. I had my
(lousy) massage and then paid for it with my points. Stupid lady.

When I registered for the players card at Resorts, the boothling clearly did
not want to be there and was extremely rude to both of us. I asked him if
they were offering anything to new customers and he said no. I asked again
because I was pretty sure they did. Eventually, he gave in and said that if
new members earn a certain number of points within 24 hours, they would get
some free play. I earned the required number of points very quickly and
went back to the same guy to get my free play. He said he had no idea what
I was talking about. It had been less than an hour since I got the card -
from him! - and he had no recollection of me or the offer he told me about.
After I spoke with a supervisor, they added the freeplay to my account.
Stupid boothling.

More than once, waiters messed up our orders and never bothered to see if we
wanted refills on our beverages.

A few good things happened in AC:
We saw "Shout! The Mod Musical" at Harrah's.
The pizza delivered to our timehsare room was awesome.
I hit two Royal Flushes.
We met two nice ladies on the bus (both were from New York).

I'm glad I went - only because I had never been there before. But, I won't
ever go back....not even for free.

It's a shame that you had such a bad experience in Atlantic City. We go to Atlantic City at least monthly and Las Vegas at least once/year. In AC we gamble primarily at Harrahs properties and have found that Harrahs, Showboat, and Bally's Wild Wild West compare very favorably with most casinos in Las Vegas.

We have also found that the staff at most of Harrahs properties are very helpful and cheerful. We stopped going to Resorts due to their staff - I guess it hasn't improved much.

We also used to agree that Showboat had the best buffet in the Harrahs family and that Borgata had the best buffet of any casino in Atlantic City. Recent trips have changed our ratings. The last time we ate at Borgata, the food was not up to their usual quality. They had removed many items and the presentation and freshness wasn't the same.

We ate at the new Waterfront buffet about a month ago at Harrahs and thought it was quite good. We ate there again yesterday and thought it was tremendous. They had added some new items and expanded on what they already had. I would now rate it the best of the Harrahs properties and also better than Borgata unless Borgata was just having a bad day when we were there.

So my Harrahs rating would be:
Harrahs Waterfront Buffet
Showboat Buffet
Bally's Wild Wild West

We've never eaten at Caesars so I don't know if they even have a buffet or what it is like.

In addition to our LV travels we do get to AC 2 or 3 times per year. We feel the best buffet is at Showboat (owned by Harrah's). While we play DB 10/7 in Vegas, the best we can do in AC is JOB 9/6.

I can't believe all the good info you all took the time to send, privately and on the forum. Perhaps I wasn't clear in my original post, but I was not primarily looking for info about good VP plays. I figured the database was up to date, and by the response I got, that seems to be the case. Such a wonderful resource that is!!!!!

I was more interested in the "whole experience," especially since this is a vacation for us, not primarily part of our "job" of gambling. We don't leave Vegas to find "good plays" - we have plenty here to more than keep us busy. And you all were great in providing information to make our vacation experience more enjoyable - on the best room locations, good places to eat, things to do, how to get around, and possible fun side trips. It was just what I was looking for.

I was going to try to answer every e-mail individually, especially to those that wrote privately, but it would have been a very time-consuming job. I want everyone to know that Brad and I appreciate all the friends we have made on these lists and their warm and friendly and helpful advice, this time and whenever we have posted a request for information. I will write a trip report when we return and I hope that will show how much we used all the information sent to us.

Thanx again, to all of you!

Service in Atlantic City isn't the best. I think its because they are so desparate for worker's that they hire anyone. My wife and I have had waiters that couldn't understand a simple request in English. We asked for mustard once and the guy didnt know what we meant. They were from Bulgaria or Russia or something.
