##My extremely limited understanding: Those marks indicate the beginning and
end of an html command. Typically those marks and the code within them are
"invisible" to html enabled formats. AOL mail uses Rich Text format that
allows some use of html code. It lets AOL users do interesting stuff with
their mail to AOL members, but in my experience has had some undesirable
affects when mailing other formats.##

Thank you. It seems that when I receive my own posts (and, I suppose others
on AOL with the same e-mail settings as mine), the quotes set off by "<< >>"
disappear, but they don't for others with different ISPs and for AOLers with
HTML disabled. If it is okay with the List members, I will use ## ## around
quoted material from now on, plus I will add a dotted line just above my
reply(ies). I hope this will be acceptable to all.
Thanks for your patience with my AOL problems.
