Anyone play for fun???

Coming from Maine, I do not live in very close proximity to a casino.
I've been to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun (also been to Vegas, once) and
with the limited time I have at the casinos I want to have fun.
Ofcourse everyone dreams of striking it rich, and I definitly want to
have as much of an edge as possible; however, I mainly go for the fun
and enjoyment of the atmosphere. I have studied VP and I know the
basic strategy for JoB, but I can't make a job out of it.
Is there anyone else out there that thinks it's just fun to play even
if you're not playing on a max payout machine, and looking for the next
comp? I don't think I've ever sat at a max payout machine and I've
never received a comp (except free drinks); if 8>5 is all they have
I'll plop down and hope for the best; last week at Mohegan Sun I did
this and ended up $20 ahead.
For me it's just entertainment.....anyone else?

Very similar experience here (except that I'm in California)

I try to learn decent strategies, to focus on games that are common
enough and simple enough to learn, to only play machines with high pay
tables (which is reasonably easy for me as I mostly play in Reno).

I personally try to minimize the variance, even if it costs me a bit
of EV (I typically don't play enough to enter "the long run").

For me the cost of driving/flying to Reno or Vegas is such that I
can't reasonably hope to come out positive on average.

I ALWAYS play for fun; however, it never hurts to seek out the most lucrative machines. That IS part of the fun for me! Unfortunately I don't live near enough to a casino or have the bankroll to be a professional gambler, but when I go, I get such a kick out of milking the system for all it's worth! ha ha! That means playing the machines with the best paytables when they're available, using all the coupons and promos I can, and always asking for any comps I can get. I guess it depends on what king of person you are... If it tickles you to squeeze every bit of value you can out of the experience then you're like me; however, other people don't feel like bothering with all the studying necessary to do this. That's OK! -- the main goal is to have fun and to get a good amount of entertainment for whatever you spend! The closest casino to me is Harrah's in Cherokee. I don't go there very often because their games are pretty terrible overall; however, if I do end up there I'll play a short-pay VP machine over a slot machine any day. Better yet, I just wait and go to Vegas or hit up Copa Casino in Biloxi and play some FPDW! It's worth the wait!
