Another Reason For Progressives

With pay schedules getting worse and worse I recently suggested
casinos put in more progressives, to create the possibility of a
+100% game. That encourages the skillful players to keep coming to
the casino. And I mentioned it doesn't hurt the casino financially
when a +100% game happens.

I forget to mention another reason for progressives, perhaps just as
important. Progressives are confidence builders in the basic
fairness of VP. I've met people who don't play VP because they think
they are "rigged" by the casino to prevent a RF from ever happening.
It's not hard to see why ... you can play for months on end and never
get one, and at some point you begin to wonder if you ever will. And
you rarely see anyone else get one either! That is a psychological
hurdle the casinos can easily overcome by installing progressives.
They provide feedback that the game is honest. For example, you can
play a few hours, go to dinner, and when you return you discover the
RF jackpot is reset. You know someone won even if you wern't there
to witness it. You rarely get that kind of positive feedback from a
non-progressive game.

In one casino where I used to play there was a group of non-
progressive machines. I played them for months and never got a RF,
and never saw anyone else get one either!!!!!! Meanwhile, nearby,
was a bank of progressives and the RF was won at least every few
days, because the jackpot was frequently reset. I don't think I
ever saw a RF on those machines either, but at least I knew it DID
HAPPEN.

If there are any casino managers who read these messages, please
listen. Now that you've ruined the pay schedules, please put in some
progressives. It won't hurt at all!!!!!

It might depend upon the type of progressive. I'm not that familiar with them, but I know that at least some _slot_ progressives are tied together among a lot of casinos, and I know that VP progressives _on-line_ are tied to a a number of casinos (or so I've been told). So, if VP progressives in land-casinos are likewise tied together, how do you know that _anyone_ is hitting the Royal just because the meter is reset. In other words, if it gets reset in the casino where you're sitting, how do you really KNOW that it has been paid to someone in another casino or in another place in the casino where you are? With a big quarter million dollar slot progressive, there is some expected publicity, but I've never noticed any sort of publicity when a $1400 Royal progressive gets hit. Even if a notice were to scroll across a marquee, casinos could easily conspire -- if they were intent on cheating people -- and Casino _A_ could display a message saying that "John Brown hit the Royal at Casino _B_" and at the same time Casino _B_ could scroll a message saying that "Toby Anderson hit the Royal at Casino _A_" ... and with many casinos participating and often more than one place in a casino to play, and as you said, people going to lunch, etc., I doubt that anyone would ever be the wiser. Probably the only way they'd get caught is if some insider squealed on them, or the gaming commission somehow caught them through some auditing process; but then, that the same problems they'd probably face no matter what sort of cheating they'd be doing. Personally, I think that their honest simply because they can make plenty of money without cheating, and the cost to them if they were ever actually caught cheating would probably be immense.

Just filling my 'posting-quota' today.

I've heard of the "multi-casino" VP games you mentioned, but have
never actually seen one.

I was referring to the "banks" of progressive VP you see in many
casinos. Each "bank" usually consists of 10-20 machines linked to
one or more progressive jackpots. In my example where the jackpot is
reset while I'm eating, it's impossible for the casino to simply
reset the jackpot while others are playing. Those players would
notice and complain. To get really paranoid we might wonder if the
casino has "planted" a player who just happens to win. My personal
opinion is that doesn't happen. Progressive pay schedules aren't
usually very good, so the casino makes a ton of money on them, even
when the progressive is very high.
