An Interesting Choice

I have not looked this up for FPDW but in the Chicago Area the best 25c
game several years ago was often 12-8 loose deuce with a 1% feed rate
progressive. Other than the version, I was in the same exact situation
dealt KQJT2 of diamonds and about $1,900 on the meter. I had done the work
beforehand of calculating the progressive break even points for this game
using the old Stanford Wong VP. In that game the break even is about $1,335
for KQJT and about $1,350 for all others. Like you, I whiffed on the draw.
Your game should be just barely lower for the KQJT due to the right 9
making a SF paying 45 instead of 40 and exactly the same $1,350 for all
others. Later 10-7 DB with a progressive came to the Chicago Area and I did
the work but back then I called penalty cards "interference" since to me
"penalty card" was a term from the game of duplicate bridge.

Hey Everybody-

I just encountered a situation in a 25-cent progressive deuces wild game
that I had never actually considered before. The progressive natural

royal

payout had grown to $1800.00 and I was dealt a wild royal flush in with
10c-Jc-Qc-Kc and a single 2d (only the Ace of Clubs was missing). I
pondered it for a moment and then found myself doing something I thought

I'd

never do. I discarded the Deuce, to go for the natural royal (and didn't
get it). My first question is.

"Has anyone else found themselves in this situation and, if so, what

choice

did you make?"

After I returned home, I ran an analysis of the hand in WinPoker and at

the

standard royal pay of 4000 coins, the best play was to hold the wild royal
(quick, get the Pepto Bismol !!). But when I changed it to 7200 coins
($1800.00) for the natural royal progressive payout, the best play was
clearly to go for the natural royal flush (whew.quick, get me a double

shot

of Jamison's on the rocks!). So my second question is.

"Does anybody know at what specific point in the progressive total the
optimum play changes from holding the wild royal to discarding the deuce

and

going for the natural? If so, is there a way to calculate that

breakpoint,

without just taking arbitrary pot-shots in WinPoker analysis between 4000
and 7200 coins?"

Of course I don't anticipate being dealt this particular choice too many
times in my VP Lifetime, but then again, you never know...

Thanks for the input!

Thanks, Howard. Fortunately I made the correct choice, but unlike you I
hadn't calculated this particular hand's breakpoint beforehand. I'll
definitely have it in my back pocket from now on.

As for Chicago, I'm going to be driving up there from St. Louis soon on
business and was going to check to see what the windy city had to offer in
the way of decent casinos. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

The casino databases are very good for checking on casinos in other
cities. I check them whenever I am going out of town to see if I need
to practice/learn a new game for that trip, just go to the links on
the home page of VPfree

Happy Royals
