Have used AMTRAK many times since I have the time & like the
station-to-station connection that is only 10 minutes away compared to 1.5 hr slog
through San Jose traffic. Door-to-door it's about twice as long as air or car
(which is only 1/2 hr more than air). That is, 10 hrs vs 5 for me.

Re discounts, in addition to what Bill says, consider the passes. If you do
any traveling in California, consider the California pass -- It's 7
one-way trips in 21 days anywhere AMTRAK goes in California (South Lake Tahoe,
Reno, Sparks & Las Vegas are included). One-way trips are defined as
point-to-point so it includes all the bus-train-bus connections in between. 21-day
period starts from day of first use & pass is good for a year. Best thing
about the pass is the price: $159. Even though I've never been able to use
it more than 4 trips, that's still just $40/trip!

For the train, go to Amtrak, which now owns the famous California Zephyr.
They have lots of discounts available. Seniors (over 60 I think) travel
as buy one, get one free. The web site is not real easy to navigate, but
with persistence, you will find routes, special deals, discounts etc
