AmeriStar, Kansas City, MO

Good morning (afternoon, evening, 1960's). First time on this section
for me. My wife and I just got back from AmeriStar this past weekend
(Jan 27). My wife plays nothing but Slots. I myself have played
virtually nothing but Blackjack in the past but have been looking to
balance my time between BJ and VP.

Unfortunately, I have nothing good to report about the paytables at
AmeriStar (or Isle of Debris for that matter). As a beginning VPer, I
have been for the past few trips, breaking in and testing my strategy
on the nickel machines at AmeriStar...mostly DDB. What immediately
caught my attention is that they have removed the Kios of nickel
machines that was located at the top of the stairs in the back of the
casino on the Buffet side of the casino. There was another bank close
to the non-smoking section upstairs. All gone. It's not huge loss as
the DDB paytables were 6/5. I saw a bit better paytables in the
quarter machines, but nothing close to full pay. The nickel machines
are still there by the soft drink machines in the center of the
upstairs area...both sides of the wall are all nickel. There is one
row of nickel machines close to the Cashier's Cage upstairs.

Another recent change for those of you low-limit BJ players: AmeriStar
now has only two $3 tables left and those go to $5 on weekends starting
at 6pm.

The VP situation in KC is looking grim. Hard to find good machines at
the 25 cent level and practically nothing at the 5 cent level.

I haven't been in Isle of Capri for a few months but the last visit
revealed several full pay machines. They have (had) the only full pay
All American in KC. They also had a few 9/6 Job. Harrah's and
Ameristar have almost nothing playable. Argosy has a few machines at
$1 and above.

This seems to be a trend all over, may have to find something else to
amuse ourselves.

I think you are right Rick. I've just started playing VP seriously
and wanted to get my feet wet on the toy machines ($.05) before
comitting to the higher denominations. We'll probably continue to
visit AmeriStar simply because my wife gets constant free food, room
and cash offers (she's Blackcard from slot play). Me, well, I'm a BJ
junky trying to get on the waggon and find an alternative. Guess
I'll have to plug less than optimum VP and hope for the quads and
Royals.

We do make frequent trips to casinos around Newkirk, Oklahoma and
Redrock (Paradise). Wouldn't recommend JOB (only game I've checked
out) at KAW. It's tied to Bingo but has 9/6 paytables at the quarter
level..25/50/1.00). "Little Paradise" (gas station just south of
OK/KS border on 77) has quarter full pay JOB that doesn't appear to
be tied to Bingo. Their nickel machines are 20-credit with max Royal
pays only at max play. Very "less than FP" paytables too. All of
the machines that I've seen at "Native Lights" are short pay. I do
think that the original Paradise down north of Redrock has a few full
pay machines or at least some full pay games. It's been a while
since I've been all the way down there though.

I will relate an experience I had in Vegas the middle of January at
the California Club (Fremont St). I had played all over the place
over the 4 days I was out there including out lying Locals casinos .
We had just returned from Silverton I think around midnight and I was
still chompin at the gills to get some good play in. We were staying
at Las Vegas Club (comped rooms for a slot tournament that I had no
desire to play in!). Thought I'd head over to Main Street Station
where I knew there was one (ONE and only ONE) nickel full pay DDB
machine. Kind of funny, there was a bank of probably 6 machines and
this ONE machine was the only one that was 10/6. Anyway, as I
entered the California Club on my way to MSS, I checked VP machines
for paytables on the way from the entrance to the Escalater to get to
the Skywalk across Main Street. When I got to the top of the
Escalater, two Security Guards accosted me demanding my ID. Having
done nothing (I wasn't speeding on the escalator and wasn't walking
while under the influence) I went ahead and gave them my DL from
Kansas. One guard glared at me while the other talked into a black
knot on his shoulder while watching me out of the corner of his eye.
This went on for a good 15 minutes with no explanations as to why
they had detained me. Finally, and somewhat reluctantly, the big bad
Security Guard handed me my DL and said that I looked "suspicious"
going to machine after machine, pushing buttons but never sitting and
playing. I just told him I was checking paytables. He looked as
though he had never heard of a "Paytable"...and very likely he
hadn't. I didn't play the machines becasue every darn one I checked
was short pay!

A rather embarrasing situation for me as they detained me at the top
of the escalator and if you are familiar with that area, it is the
route everyone takes when going from Fremont St to MSS. Anyway, that
was the first time I've been "detained" for checking VP machines. I
know I'm not on their list for BJ because I've never played at any of
the Boyd properties (poor table rules and poor pen.)

Mike,

If you are serious about VP one of the best investments you can make
is to get one of the video poker tutor programs, either FrugalVP from
Jean Scott or Winpoker from Bob Dancer. Maybe you already have.

We find Ameristar to have the best comps in the KC market. We get
more food comps than we can use and get free room offers that we never
use. Before they ripped out most of the full pay machines we both
also enjoyed Star Club status which gave us access to the lounge for
more free food and drink. But for the last year we have shifted most
of our play to Harrah's and lost our Star Club membership -- still
have black cards, though. Too bad, we really had a good thing going
and had a great host. She got us free tickets to shows, movies,
invitations to special events, NASCAR tickets, and more food comps
than we could consume. We played a lot and Lucky Lucy hit 14 royals
during the summer of 2005. I also hit a few.

But the curtain came down on our show and now Harrah's have removed
all their good machines too. So we are playing less and shifting play
to Argosy where we are finding a few full pay but bankroll consuming
machines (3-play $1, $5 single line). BTW Argosy is ready to open a
new hotel and their casino is first class -- Las Vegas quality.

I am well familiar with the area in the Cal you are talking about. We
stayed many times at the Fremont in the past (also in the Las Vegas
Club). I have never heard of anyone being hassled for just looking at
machines -- that is absurd! We used to really like downtown, that was
where the low-roller but serious gamblers hung out. Now, though, it
seems to attract a different crowd; loud, obnoxious, and drunk. We
have shifted to strip casinos, mainly the ones owned by Harrah's since
we get free offers from them.

We had planned to go through Oklahoma and stay at casinos on our way
to Tucson this year. Starting at Clairmore Downs and hitting some
Indian casinos on the way west. But the weather prevented that route
and we boogied into south Texas to get below the ice and snow storm.
Oklahoma is still on the list of places to go and things to do.

Rick,
I've been "in training" first with a VP simulator called BVS but it was
severely lacking in features I wanted. I trialed and bought VPW
(Dancer's Video Poker for Winners). It's not bad but does have room
for improvment. It needs to be programmed more effeciently for it now
eats virtually cpu cycle available! The screen is not resizable.
There are some things in the analysis functionality that I'd like to
see presented differently. Hands you make mistakes on are saved but to
replay them for practice, you have to individually select each hand.
It needs the option to just playout the "mistake hands" as though in a
regular session. Good arguments can certainly be made for the software
Jean Scott endorses and I can't argue with that opinion.

As for Oklahoma...I wouldn't go out of my way to visit their casinos.
But that comes mostly from the Blackjack alter-ego of my psyche. They
rape blackjack players with a $.50 ante PER HAND! Yet, it is close
relative to the distance from where I live as compared to Kansas City
so we do go down to the closer casinos quite often. In fact, we're
heading down there tonight...probably to Paradise just north of
Redrock. I'll pay close attention to the paytables in different
denominations and let you know what I find.

There is something about Oklahoma and Class II machines. I do not know
if the OK Gaming Commission will even allow Class III machines there.
It's a topic to which I've gotten varying answers. I know that the
Bingo VP machines are all Class II. However, I am pretty sure that
there are machines that are not shackled to Bingo...at least they do
not have Bingo Cards on the face of the poker machine!

You mentioned going to Harrah'$ "up north". I think I saw where you
guys had visited Prairie Band (15 miles north of Topeka on 75.) Have
you gone on 30 miles further north to Sac & Fox and the Golden Eagle?
At least for Blackjack, those two are comparable to the KC Casinos. I
fear that the VP is a wasteland there, but then, what's new!

Follow-up on mention of "Paradise" just north of Redrock, Oklahoma:

Quarter FULL-PAY DDB (10/6) 100.067%

Quarter DB (9/7) 99.106%

Nickel DB (9/6/5) 97.806%

Nickel DDB (9/6/4) 98.981%

Except for the Full Pay JOB at "Little Bit of Paradise" gas station
(just north of Newkirk), there is no other "good" VP on Highway 77/177
north of the Cimmaron Turnpike in Oklahoma!

KAW is a total waste of time for VP players. Only machines that might
tempt you are 9/6 JOB that is really just a Bingo Game (Class II
machines). Even the Paytable "Help" ignores poker and just shows
winning hit squares on a bingo card!

Rick and Mike,

In the past year we have visited KC several times, just as the hammer
dropped on good VP. We always stayed at the Historic Suites prior to
their turning into lofts, it was a great place at 6th and Central.

We visit Las Vegas about 6 times a year, and made Diamond Jan 2006, we
love the Harrah's offers but VP is running way at a fast pace from all
Harrah's locations.

As for Oklahoma, stay with the Cherokee Casinos. They have class III
slots and real IGT video poker with JOB 25/50 cents at 8/5 and $1 at
8/6; DDB 9/5 25/50 and 9/6 at the dollar level. All machines are set
alike so you don't have to run around checking the paytables. They are
phasing out the bingo class II machines but they still have quite a
few. The Catoosa (Tulsa)casino has multiple Wheel of Fortune machines
at various levels that are hooked to all Native American progressives.
(you can check the progressives on the IGT website. They recently
installed one of those Huge 11 seat machines that stays fairly busy.
It's in the non-smoking section of the Casino. The Cherokee Casino
Claremore race track has the same paytables but it needs some money
poured at it, since it sat many years empty before the Cherokee tribe
took it over. It's a little more "Country" than Las Vegas'ish.

Last time I was at Argosy KC I swore I'd not go back but with Rick's
recommendation I'll give it a try next trip. I'm just waiting for warm
weather to set in.

Thanks for the trip reports,
Jim in Tulsa

P.S. (Downtown Fremont in LV has 10/6 DDB at the 50 cent level right in
front of the bar, so you won't get caught "Looking")
