America West Airline saga (XVP)

The next morning we left on a flight back to KC. The plane left on time

and we had only >been leveled off a short time when the captain announced we
had a problem. He was calm >and said we needed to stay in our seats. Everyone
naturally complied, but soon after he >said we were going to land in
Albequerque. Before we got there the plane drove rapidly >once and then a second
time. The captain announced that we were losing cabin pressure >and that was
the reason

for his maneuvers. Most people at this point were getting a little

excited. Normally planes >coast in to conserve fuel, but we seemed to be
approaching the Albequerque airport under >full power! We landed safely but some of
the passengers were quite shaken by the >landing. After landing we weren't
allowed to get off immediately which I thought was very >strange. Ambulances
circled the plane and several EMTS got on and came down the aisle.

The agent said we couldn't lock in today's prices and if we liked the $178

price we might >want to forget about the vouchers. We checked and flights
leaving 24 from them were in the >$400-500 price range, making the vouchers
truly worthless!

We aren't very happy with them. Your comments please.

99% of the time I fly using my miles on American Airlines. About 3 years
ago, departing LV, I got to the AA counter and my connecting flight home was
cancelled. Trying to be helpful, they put me on a "cooperating airline"-America
West. I trekked to the other side of the terminal to be ticketed and ended up
in a middle seat over the wing. Not much I could do about it. Upon takeoff,
we heard a loud sound and the person by the window told us that something
fell off the engine. One or two call button lights went on and the flight
attendant made the announcement to turn them off during takeoff unless for an
emergency. Then about 5-6 more went off. She came down the aisle, looked out the
window & hurried to the cockpit.
The captain made the announcement that there was a problem with one of the
engines, not to worry and that we would be returning to LV. We circled, dumped
fuel and landed. Meanwhile, a lot of the passengers were getting hysterical.
All I could think of was that no one knew I was on that flight!
Of course upon landing we were out in the middle of the runway with fire
engines and medics waiting (for us to blow up, I guess). Eventually we got to
the gate and were courteously handed a......5 min phone card!.. to call someone
that our flight would be changed. I just laughed and said, "You gotta be
kidding me!". I called home (on my cell phone) and all my emotions then came out.
I guess I was more scared that I let myself believe.
Anyway, I went to the desk and told them I was too terrified to fly again
that day and I wanted to be taken back to LV. (he-he) They said they would
arrange for a shuttle to a hotel they dealt with. When I found out it had no
casino, I declined and took a cab back to where I was staying. (Which by the way
was very nice after hearing my story and comped me that night).
Before I left the airport, I went to the AA counter and told them what
happened and to arrange for a flight the next day; and that I was very nervous
about flying and since they put me on America West, I should go back home first
class. She was very obliging and said the first leg would be no problem, but
I would have to check at the gate at my connection to be upgraded. She wrote
a long note in the computer and I was upgraded again. I love AA; I will never
fly America West again.
But I did get an extra day in Vegas. Happy ending.
