America West Airline saga (XVP)

Last October my wife and I flew to Phoenix on America West to visit some relatives for a week. We stayed in Mesa the first part of the trip, then we all went to the Grand Canyon (absolutely breathtaking). We then drove to Laughlin and stayed 2 nights there. I taught my aunt how to play blackjack. Normally she only plays quarter slots and was very nervous about betting $5/hand at blackjack (she had no idea she was far better off with me at the tables hehe). After not winning or losing much anything, we drove back to Mesa. The next morning we left on a flight back to KC. The plane left on time and we had only been leveled off a short time when the captain announced we had a problem. He was calm and said we needed to stay in our seats. Everyone naturally complied, but soon after he said we were going to land in Albequerque. Before we got there the plane drove rapidly once and then a second time. The captain announced that we were losing cabin pressure and that was the reason
for his maneuvers. Most people at this point were getting a little excited. Normally planes coast in to conserve fuel, but we seemed to be approaching the Albequerque airport under full power! We landed safely but some of the passengers were quite shaken by the landing. After landing we weren't allowed to get off immediately which I thought was very strange. Ambulances circled the plane and several EMTS got on and came down the aisle. Some pasengers apparently needed help for various situations, including ear pain, and nausea. We were told 5 or 6 went to the hospital. After maybe 30 minutes we left the plane and were told to stay near that gate. Most people were calm by now and sat quietly, while a few started asking the woman at the gate as to the time we would likely be there. One large, young guy in his mid 20's was being very obnoxious about demanding compensation and was getting very loud with the poor woman! She tried to be nice to him, but she obviously was not in a
position to make that decision. Two policemen arrived soon after standing 30 feet away. The man became belligerent with her and police said and did absolutely nothing. It seemed rediculous that they were letting him get away with his intimidation. Later I wondered if they were giving him enough rope to hang himself, so to speak. I had had enough and went to her aid, basically telling him to shut up and to leave her alone! He then started cussing at me and the police did come over and got between us then. After a tense 5 hour wait, another plane arrived from Phoenix to take us on our way. The rest of the flight was thankfully uneventful.

My wife and I wondered what, if anything, we would get for compensation from America West. About a month after the flight, we each received vouchers for $150, which we thought was more than fair. We had one year to use them. The vouchers were going to expire next month, so this past weekend we were making final plans for a trip to Reno for the first time. Their web site showed flights available as cheaply as $178! Almost free airfare, not including other fees. We called them to find out how to utilize our vouchers. We were told they could only be used for reservations 24 hours before the flights leave. Basically a glorified standby situation! The agent said we couldn't lock in today's prices and if we liked the $178 price we might want to forget about the vouchers. We checked and flights leaving 24 from them were in the $400-500 price range, making the vouchers truly worthless!

We aren't very happy with them. Your comments please.

No doubt ... ridicuous compensation.

Since federal rules don't require compensation for
delays/inconvenience due to weather delays or equipment problems (only
involuntary bumping due to overbooking, really), you're subject to
whatever compensation the airline chooses, if anything.

As suggested in another reply, your voucher should provide the terms
for redemption. If restrictions weren't adequately detailed you have
cause for complaint (though likely little legal remedy were you at all
inclined in that direction ... I suspect not). Of course, bringing
your disastisfaction to the attention of the airline is entirely
appropriate.

A quick internet search surfaced the following that may be of interest:

I hope this is helpful.

Had a problem with them as detailed in a copy of my letter below
which they "resolved" by sending me a similar worthless voucher.

America West Airlines
Attention: Customer Relations
400E Sky Harbor Blvd.
Phoenix, AZ 85034

Dear Sirs:

This letter relates to an expensive and aggravating problem caused by
your airline personnel on March 12, 2005. My wife _______ had booked
me on Flight 730 from Kennedy Airport, NYC to McCarren Airport, Las
Vegas departing 3/12/05 at 7:30 P.M. She had used her frequent flier
miles and was given a confirm # of _______; she was told that I
should check in and give the counterperson that number. I did check
in at the check in counter at approximately 5:30 and was given a
boarding pass and told I was all set and to proceed to the gate. [A
copy of the boarding pass is enclosed marked "Exhibit A".]

Subsequently after proceeding to gate, I gave the boarding pass to
the agent when my row was called. The computer kicked out my name and
I was told to see agent at the gate counter. I was told that that
there was a $5 charge which the check in agent (whose name I was told
was V_____) should have collected, and she should have never issued
me a boarding pass. Furthermore I could not pay this in cash at the
gate, so I tendered a credit card. However the gate agent said had to
contact the frequent flier division and by the time she was able to
the flight left without me.

The gate agent T____ was the only helpful, competent and sympathetic
person I dealt with. Unfortunately, after delay in contacting
frequent flier personnel and their insisting to speak with my wife
by cell phone, the flight was missed. T___ booked me on flight 104
leaving 7:35 A.M. the next morning 3/13/05. I requested that America
West at least provide a hotel, as I had come from Connecticut and was
over 150 miles roundtrip away. T___ was told by the frequent flier
division that the would not do this as it was the gate agent's
fault, and when I asked her to speak to airport personnel she had
her supervisor O_____ come over to me. O_____ hardly listed to the
problem and curtly refused to provide a hotel room and departed
abruptly. I was forced to make hotel arrangements on my own [a copy
of the receipt is enclosed as Exhibit B].

To summarize, I missed a flight and was greatly inconvenienced and
financially burdened because your personnel did not know or follow
your own procedures. Furthermore it does not reflect well on your
airline when different divisions (gate and frequent flier) each say
the other is at fault and take no responsibility for customer
inconvenience. Frequent flier programs are presumably to promote
loyalty with regular customers, and the incident in question cuts
directly counter to such objective. Therefore I request that your
airline reimburse me for hotel chares and provide such other
recompense as you deem equitable.

Very truly yours,

David _________

I think America West should be avoided, what is high change fees, extremely limited frequent flyer seats, and worthless vouchers for a situation that they didn't even inform you of.

I'm US Airways for years. Same difference there. Southwest just came
to my market. The "cheap" seats are only cheap when they fly you out
of the way. Fly nonstop same as US Airways and Southwest jacks up the
price. Of course Southwest did seem to get someof the rates down in
my market.

Great news, Pesach and Jeep: These two are merging to make one big
mediocre airline!

Sorry. I haven't had good experiences with either one. I generally
like Southwest, but recently have had a dickens of a time getting
credit for the last flight needed for the free ticket. I flew to LV
(big surprise) in August but they evidently don't think I flew back.
I'm still allowing 6-8 weeks for them to respond to my letter.

Hey Drew

Maybe they thought you hit one of those mega jackpots and didn't want
to go back. If I ever hit one I think I'd take a few extra days to
hang by the pool. If it's too cold for pool then maybe I'll look at
some condos or houses. Gee, there goes my miles. I think I'll go
play the Powerball tonight.

Cheers....Jeep
