Amazon sucks by Frank Kneeland

Someone is selling new and used copies of my book on amazon.com for $180 new and $179.99 used. Since my book only costs $29.42 NEW, this is causing some confusion. My book is not even supposed to be on Amazon.

I have spoken with them, and they are committed to doing nothing. It is their policy that anyone can resell a book for any price, even used, at more than cover.

If I were all of you, I'd think about adding this to my reasons for never using Amazon for anything. Of course I'm not you, but I thought you'd all like to know about this.

The correct places to get my book NEW are:

1. www.progressivevp.com
2. Huntington Press http://www.huntingtonpress.com/
3. The Gamblers Book Store

Price = $29.42

And I also have used copies available, for those of you that like more decimal places, at: $294.29

Is anyone actually buying them at that price?, because I will your books all day at $30 anf sell them for over $100.

No doubt, it's a vpFREE lurker. Can you check with GBC or Huntington to see if anyone has bought multiple editions of your book? This reminds me of the tiny classified adds that sell info on how to go to work for the Postal Service. You can get the same information out of any library.

You have to do your homework on Amazon or you might get burned. However, bargains abound. Last week Dancer's book was twenty CENTS. This week it is up to twenty three cents.

Ah, Guess I have to break the news... Independent book sellers have new 2011 ACG books on sale at Amazon for less than $12.00....repeat new, i.e all coupons intact. So where do those other rediculous prices come from that Frank was talking about...there is always some jerk putting stuff up on Amazon at ridiculous prices, which is their right. It's called free enterprise. Reminds me of the guy selling a copy of Three card poker, by Stanley Ho, for $300, some time back. Yup- ridiculous!!

Nice way to sneak in a book plug.

Your beef should be with those trying to sell the book, not Amazon.
You are also assuming that someone is actually buying the book at the inflated price. Why not add your own listing and undercut the other sellers?

FWIW, I use Amazon for nearly everything as well. They seem to be pretty reliable. But will have to be careful in the future not to pay $180 for a book I could have purchased for 23 cents! One thing though, I have ordered books before that were drop shipped from a different entity. Not sure what's up with that. I can't remember if the book was used or not but probably was now that I think of it.

It appears to me that Amazon puts an author in competition with himself--or at least others who bought and read the book then try to recoup cost by selling the book at a fraction of the new price. How does an author compete against that?

As for there being no publisher listed in Frank's book it appears that he is self published and holds all rights. I don't think this is such a bad way to go in a niche market. Write the book, publish yourself, create publicity vis a vie vpFREE and other sites....and a website....and a radio show....

I have a friend, Claude, who is a bartender and a short story writer. He got nothing but rejection slips from the publishing companies so he self-published through Author House. In a conversation a few years ago he told me that his cost works out to about $4 a book for publishing and shipping. He sets his books on a stand on the back bar and sells them for $15 apiece. A nice little added income and he holds all rights.

Sorry, Frank, I also use Amazon for books+. I met a guy who told me he had a book on Amazon, and I went there to buy it. It did cost me $3.99 for shipment, but the book was only .01

It's published by True Apocrypha. I's my own publishing company.

The name is just a funny oxymoron I've been writing comedy under for years. My first work under the name was entitled, Mead The Universe and Everything. It won first place in an arts competition at a ren fair. I've been using it ever since.

Okay, so when you find your book on eBay, are you going to tell people not to use eBay, too?

If you want to be in the book business, you'd better make sure your book is for sale on Amazon. You can be a self-published author selling books via print on demand and have them for sale on Amazon. You don't have to pay a printing company print a thousand copies of your book then store them in your garage... print on demand allows you to make your book available and it doesn't get printeduntil somebody orders it. Cost out of pocket? Zero.
