Am I the Only One?

Howdy

As far as vp is concerned it was a very good year. I play .25 JOB very well
and am pleased with the cash back and comps. So I know going in that there
is a good chance I will probably have a good year even if I break even money
wise. Free entertainment ,food and gifts not withstanding.

That being said I had a comped one night stand yesterday to take
advantage(?) of my first slot tournament and a pot and pan set giveaway. I took 600
bucks with me as my usual bankroll for two days play. The casino considers two
back to back days more rewarding in terms of level of play than two days that
are not. You figure it out!

The first evening I played I went thru the first two hundred in one hour and
a half. That to me is fast. The last hundred about four hours. Goodbye money.

The no brainer slot tournament click click click for twelve minutes yielded
me a score of 10898 which I thought would put me in the bottom of the forty
winners...no luck there either.

Next day I got the feeling when I started playing I was gonna have a rerun
of last evening.
I was right. I quit after maybe four hours play down another 250.

I went to pick up my gift and there was a line longer than Howard Hugh's
fingernails...and it was heavy.

Now here is the thing. I was bordering on being depressed and was bummed out
from having two days of losing 550.

I tried to rationalize the "long term" theory and how it will even out by
years end but it took a while to get back to my abnormal self.

Is there a doctor in the house?

Ah, volatility - as I wrote in this week's Frugal Fridays - the Agony and the Ecstasy. I wish I could give you an antidote - but if I had one, I would take it myself. We've been playing VP for 15 years - and all I can say is this: It does get EASIER the more losing periods you go through, but it NEVER is EASY - unless you aren't human!!!!!

The one thing that does help us is that we play well below what our bankroll would allow. That way whatever we lose isn't close to hurting our long-term financial security. I find that too many people play above the needed bankroll or too close to the "edge." That is a recipe for sure mental anguish! However, for some people ANY loss is painful - no matter how many assets they have left after a losing streak. They have such a small psychological bankroll that gambling will rarely be a pleasant experience for them.

Even though 9/6 JOB is one of the least volatile vp games, there is no
doubt that surprisingly long losing streaks can (and will) happen.
Remember that if you do not get a RF or a SF, you are playing a 97%
game.

So every $10,000 coin-in will cost you $300 IF you get your share of
quads. (It can get much worse if you don't get your share of quads).

And it is relatively easy to go several days without getting a SF or RF.

What the "long term" means to me is that these all too frequent losing
streaks are (eventually) balanced out by an unbelievable winning streak
(e.g. multiple royals in a short trip).
