Am I doomed already?

This has been a really interesting thread and I would like to throw in my
novice two cents worth.
The expected long term payback is I am sure much higher than what is
available on most slots (this is why there is a bigger jackpot win on slots), video
poker provides more interactivity (stratagy & thinking) than just pressing a
button/pulling a lever and waiting for the reels to stop. VP gives you more time
for the money; put a $100 in a slot and see how fast it goes, that is why most
VP points require 2x the amount of cash in as slots.
More time also means more money through and more points and time which can
mean more opportunity for comps and mail offers.
Lastly for me it provides entertainment for me and a way to stretch my dollar
usually playing 9/6 JoB or 8/5 Bonus on the strip. The Royal would be great
and I am waiting for my first (well second really but I only had a quarter in
on an 8/5 JoB because I was out of cash and was just waiting for my girlfriend
to come out of the bathroom.)

I agree with everything you say except for the relationship between slot jackpots and their payback. That is not how they work, but your conclusion that they pay back less overall is mucho correct .
If you want to get a little more serious about VP, get yourself a tutorial program and learn the game. Go to this site... http://www.zamzone.com/ , and you can download a free tutorial program that handles jacks or better. IF you like it then you can go to a full version of it or Jim Wolfs Program which is also very good.

The overall payback on a slot machine is determined by the old Random Number Generator and it's relationship with the payoff chip.
The chip determines the payoffs that the RNG picks.
An example.....
2 slot machines side by side same make and model all the payoff combinations and amounts are identical. Do they have the same overall payback ?
You don't know ?
Why, because you don't know if they have the same chip.
If one machine has a high pay chip it may hit the top jackpot twice as often as the low paying chip.

Picture a theoretical chip for a one real slot machine with 3 symbols on it
they will be # , % , and & blank.

The # is the jackpot of 100 units
The % is 10 units
The & is 1 unit
The blank is zip

High paying chip will have the following layout

line 1 - #
line 2 - %
line 3 - &
line 4 - blank
line 5 - blank
line 6 - &
line 7 - %
line 8 - #

Low paying chip will have the following layout

line 1 - #
line 2 - %
line 3 - &
line 4 - blank
line 5 - blank
line 6 - &
line 7 - %
line 8 - %

The random Number Generator will be set to generate the numbers 1 through 8 in a totally random fashion.

You can see that the high paying chip has more jackpot positions in it, therefore pays more, even though the jackpot is the same size.

This is why people go to the Bellagio and play slot machine "X" and get blown away, but then they go to a locals place and playing the same machine last longer "loose" machines.

This went on way too long , but it is the only way an old programmer like me can explain it .
The actual mechanics of the chips may differ but the principle is about the same.
