In January, the new chairman of the Senate Finance Committee said the AMT
was being killed off this year. Then he realized the cost of getting rid of it
and that was the end of that. Congress did pass an extension of the AMT
"patch" on December 20th. That meant that only about 4 million people (most of
them middle class) would get hit with the AMT rather than the extra 20
million that would have been hit without the patch. The AMT was originally designed
to tax about 300,000 very wealthy individuals who used the tax code to their
advantage (all very legally).
